I can't wait to use mana clash against the Malificarum in the Forrest while on the way to the Ruins. That's gonna be fun.
I just did that fight with my party last night, and while I'm not using Mana Clash, the fight went crazy fast.
I have Morrigan specced and geared for cold damage, with 34 Magic and max Wilpower she does nearly 90 damage with Winter's Grasp. Morrigan led the fight with a cone of cold, and hit every single one of them. Muttley overpowered one of the yellow mobs, and chewed off it's face. The main character, an archer, used the AOE arrow on one of the mobs, finishing off both white mobs, and injuring the last yellow mob, who was already being pounded on by Zev, my Rogue tank. Zev has over 100 attack, over 120 defense, and a ton of +%chance to dodge attacks and is dual wielding, when he wants things dead they die.
I'm pretty sure that fight went faster than it should have without using Mana Clash. This party has so much damage I don't even CC with anything other than Muttley's howl and the AOE arrow (forget its name) and I mostly use the arrow because it does damage, not because it stuns.

When I tried that I didn't have time to cast mana clash before my whole party was frozen/dead. I reloaded and moved away from the party before casting it. So the fight lasted five seconds instead of three.

Morrigan`s robe with the ice staff (dont know his name in english). easy 80-90 in endgamesethroskull79 wrote...
Kesshi, how does your Morrigan do 90? My main char is a mage with over 50 magic and 65 or 70 spellpower and can't touch 90. His lightning spell does good damage. I also got the heavy hitter achievement with Mana Clash. I did 334 on a Hurlock Alpha mage in Wynne's cut scene when she gains her special ability.

Winter's Breath - +15% Cold Damage
Ashen Gloves - +20% Cold Damage
Robes of Possession - +20% Cold Damage
Froshshear - +10% Cold Damage
Hailstone - +5% Cold Damage
My Morrigan has 34 base magic, and with all the bonuses from gear, relationship bonuses, and class specilizations she ends up with 34 + 13 = 47 Magic overall. She's currently level 20 and I've been maxing out her Willpower, which is currently at 51 + 3 = 54. With zero buffs up she runs around with 449 max mana. Of course I always have Haste and Arcane Shield up which puts her at 359 max mana. She functions as both healer and DPS, and does it quite well. The biggest problem I'm having with her is the lack of tactic slots. Turn this on at < 50%, turn it off at >= 90%, each "optional" buff takes up two tactic slots. Still, this is a very fun character, and I think I'm going to make variations on this setup for future games.

The +% gear is maxed at 30. Not sure if you knew that. So all that extra +% over so isnt affecting the damage. Thats why I asked cause I got +30% cold and more spellpower than what a 47 over all magic char would have and My Mage takes about 70 with cold spells.
Well shucks. No, I did not know that. Then I have no idea why my Morrigan is aproaching triple digit damage with her cold spells. The only thing I can figure is that she has a healthy amount of +magic over her base 34, other than that I don't know what to say.
Thanks for letting me know about the +% cap. I'll have to adjust my playstyle for the current game and the future.

*Seriously, Bioware, why does damage still scroll after I pause the game? I want to see my big shiny numbers for screenshot purposes. How else am I to brag to people online?

I figured that getting your status effects to "hit" was the most important thing. For example, when I cast "paralyze" I want it to work, not work only 50% of the time (because it's resisted). From what I understand, the higher your Magic (well, Spellpower) rating, the more likely it is to "hit" and the longer the effect will be.
That, plus the fact that mana is cheap (via Lyrium potions, though I found I really didn't need to use them much -- fights end so fast!) means I maxed Magic almost every chance I got.

Base 88 Magic, only 30 Willpower though.
My status effects are *nice* though! :-)

Instantly kills every one (on Nightmare no less) in under a second. I was surprised at that, because usually the yellows have a sliver of life left after Mana Clash. The spell really is massively overpowered. It should make multi mage fights more manageable not end them before they begin.
