I think Mass Effect 2 and 3 were great games - but in a trilogy, sequels rarely surpass the original.
To me - Mass Effect 1 is still the best game in the series.
I'd even argue that it is good enough to stand alone.
I could live with its ending where shepard says "The Reapers are still out there" - and leave it up to my imagination.
However - my point is:
I feel that story-wise the series was already in decline with the second game.
It had a weird story that always felt like a huge side quest to me.
The entire collector thing - and rallying allies together - felt like it side tracked from the actual goal of defeating the reapers.
It took 3 games for the reapers to arrive - something that also keeps throwing me off today when I look at the ending of ME1 and ME2 - they both show th reapers coming.
And yet - only in the 3rd game do we actually think about rallying the species together.
If you ask me - a two parter would've been enough:
- The original game
- A sequel where the reapers arrive
I appreciate all the games, and Mass Effect will always be one of my favorite sci-fi series - but in retrospect -
I think there was so much potential, so many open doors - and it doesn't seem to quite deliver now.
I dunno....I'm not one of those who say that I'm finished with the series - I'm not - but these are just my thoughts.
"Sometimes less - is more"
Anyone else feel that Mass Effect should have been a two-parter?
