Mass Effect 3
Extended Cut Endings Success and Failure
Please Note: That I am a Fan of Shepard! Not the Mass Effect Universe... Well... Not
to the same degree.
The Extended Cut dramatically improved the ending of the
Mass Effect Universe. However it is
still a partial Failure.
Let's look at each ending rationally. Each ending has both good and bad in
them. Both success and failure. Like a Black Cloud with a silver lining.
Control (Blue) Shepard
Chooses to Control the Reapers and end the war. By doing so, her body is destroyed but her
consciousness is transferred into the control
module of the Reapers essentially becoming an Artificial Intelligence. She then uses the Reapers resources to help
rebuild both the Mass Relays and Civilization and watches over the
organics. Should a threat arise that
they can't handle on their own.... BUT Shepard Still Dies!
Synthesis (Green) Shepard gets disintegrated and her essence is
distributed across the galaxy. All
organic life is merged with synthetics becoming neither machine nor organic, but
some advanced form of Bio-synthetic life.
With no more distinction between
machine and organic all Related War ends. and together they push forward breaking the
boundaries of science.... BUT Shepard Still Dies!
Destroy (Red) Shepard Chooses to Destroy the Reapers once and
for all. By doing so she kills all geth.
(which I made peace with) This also Kills EDI (who I helped find love) The
citadel is destroyed, the Relays are Destroyed, BUT they can rebuild it, by
Working Together.... And Shepard lives!!!! ..... so long as she gets medical attention
ASAP...
Reject (Nothing) You Reject the catalysts Flawed logic and do
nothing. The Reapers win. Civilization as you know it is
destroyed! HOWEVER! That
Time Capsule Created by Liara which Chronicles your war and knowledge of
the Reapers Survives and the Future civilization successfully destroy the
Reapers! The Star Gazer is Replaced with
what looks like an Asari Matriarch talking to the child... and doesn't use that
Petafylic comment, "My Sweet"
I will admit, as someone who was "Hurt" by the
ending of ME3's launch endings, I've got MUCH less of a bad taste in my mouth
this time around. AND I will admit, I
like Each of the Endings to some extent.
The Failures that I see, is that Shepard, this character,
this Ultimate hero (if you choose to be) that I've made a
"Connection" with, Dies! After everything "We've" been
through, all of the odds we've beat Throughout all 3 games! Except
in the Destroy ending. YES, there are good endings. But Each sacrifices something to achieve
it.... I KNOW! Thats the point they are
trying to make. BUT to build up a
character to that extent. To create
someone with that much depth, someone that i'm sure people have "Made a
connection with". I may get a good
ending but Shepard doesn't get to see this Bright future she's created. Thats what hits me. Destroy Ending is the only one where Shepard could
live. But you have to Sacrifice the Geth
who I made peace with, And EDI who I helped to find love. On one hand I prefer the destroy ending. But I also don't like the idea of killing the
Geth and EDI for the above mentioned reasons.
I would be keenly interested IF bioware ever decided to continue
the Mass Effect story if they brought Command Shepard Back! BUT not as a main character or bad guy. However of the 4 endings only 2 could do
this:
Control: Shepard is
now an AI watching over civilization as a Guardian so to speak. Could Bring shepard back in a support or
information role for the main character.
synthesis: Shepard
dies, disintegrated... plus that future
is.... too perfect. Unless.... they made
it like Tomb Raider Anniversary. Exploring ruins and killing wild life....
Destroy: All
synthetics are dead... BUT Shepard lives! Shepard could lose her combat effectiveness
do to permanent injury (maybe a bum leg or something) and take an Admiral Hackett Role, Providing
Mission debriefings, information, as well as support (verbal and or emotional)
to the new hero.
Rejection: Everyone
Dies...
So I View the Extended cut as both a Success and a
Failure. And I may even play the
Trilogy again... maybe... in time.
Now for taking the concepts from Mass Effect and putting
them into a Different Game Universe of their own all together, The war between
Organics and Machines (in the space age of course) and the idea and Looks
behind the synthesis ending would be cool! (I was almost inspired when I saw
Ashley Williams with her bio-synthetic glow, also in the space age.)
Now for possible future enemies, What if Harbinger found a way to resist
Shepard's Commands, then Rallies half the Reapers for a Strategic war against
the organics? Shepard would have to take
her Reapers which i'm calling "Guardians" to war against them, but
will have to work with organics.
PLEASE DO NOT turn Mass Effect into an MMO! There are too many attempts out there!!!!
