Ok. So, I was a big opposer of the original ending. It had too many plot holes, totally went against the pre-established (and successful) theme, and was just incredibly unsatisfying. But today, I reloaded my save before the Cerberus base to get myself back in the mood, and here's what I thought, piece by piece.
As you know, the new content starts with Joker picking up your injured crew during the final run towards the beam. I'll admit that it feels a bit awkward having that massive of a ship land without being shot at while Reapers are targetting little trucks and soldiers, but it's nice to at least get some kind of explanation to a weird plot hole. Bioware, you tried, and I at least appreciate that.
Then there's the conversation with the Catalyst. I actually appreciated the extra dialogue options I was able to pursue in finding out exactly what each ending meant. I was never really "confused" by the endings, but extra insight was nice, if not as essential as many other problems.
I also liked the new, 4th ending. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I greatly respect those who decided that their Shepard would rather die fighting in what they believe in than submit to an AI child, (who appearance is never explained, but oh well) and it was cool to see that. And I lol'd when I tried shooting the kid.
And then I picked the destroy ending, since it was my original choice. It was sad saying goodbye to the Geth and EDI, but the ending cutscene felt exaclty like what it should have been. There were plenty of scenes depicting the Krogan rebuilding, and seeing everything else restored was cool. And the scenes of the Reapers falling everywhere? That's exactly what the ending needed in the first place; that satisfying moment of victory, of knowing that your sacrifice was worth it.
I felt like the Quarians could have used a bit more coverage (maybe seeing one without a face?) but it wasn't too bad. The jungle scene felt a bit out of place, and I almost threw my controller in rage thinking that was where you guys had stopped, before Hackett's monologue played. The final moments with the crew, the ships jumping away, etc.......it wasn't everything I had hoped it would be, but it's a passable, and satisfying ending.
And the music? I heard two unique tracks: one new piano piece for the "Accept your fate" ending, and a revised one for the runnaway Normandy part. They were very well done.
Bioware, you have restored a good amount of my faith in you. I only said those mean things about you behind your back (or, err, on your forums) because you're too good for EA and they squander your talent, and it pained me to not see you guys get the time and resources you guys deserved. While this was far from a perfect ending to an otherwise fantastic series, it....it.....*wipes tear from eye* it feels like an ending from YOU GUYS again. Something that makes Shepard feel important, and like your choices mattered.
And all for free.
Thank you.
