Why the reapers lost their unique mind for a collective " catalyst " mind ?

I like to think Harby is the catalyst and is just trying to mess with shep. No not meaning the whole crappy IT which is stupid. I mean when you shoot him hes like SO BEE IT. I dont think the catalyst is the kid. my main question still stands though BIO WHAT WAS UP WITH THOSE DREAMS? Still cant make any sense of that..

I may be very, very wrong buuut...
