I have read a lot about Alistair and it seems he is a very popular character... I for one find him obnoxious and frequently want to punch him in the face. We are facing a blight and he whines like a 12 year old girl about pretty much every trivial thing. Did my pooch snap at you when you went for his food? Whine some more bro.

Anyways, I have to applaud BioWare for creating characters who have redeeming qualities, whom I care about, yet have problems with. Morrigan and Sten are my favorite characters, and I easily get them to 100... despite numerous disapproves of my decision making... oh you have a problem with me saving lives? Eff off. This may seem off my subject, my point being I do believe Alistair is a good person whose heart is in the right place... he's just a p****, and I find him uninspiring and in constant need of coddling.

To cut to the point... who here likes Alistair and who doesn't and why?

Those who dislike and those who like Alistair will provide the same reason.

Alistair is nice.

Really? Because I like that Alistair is nice, his heart is in the right place. I still don't like him though because he is a tool and whines more than my sister did when she was little (and that is a Hell of a lot). So to maybe clarify... who thinks Alistair is cool and who thinks he is a tool?

I don't dislike him for being nice so much as lacking in fortitude. His pleasant demeanor is preferable to Sten and Morrigan for sure. I can't go into the reasons I dislike him in this forum because they stem directly from the main plot.

Every party needs comic relief, and that's where Alistair jumps into the picture.

The one thing that is good about tools, they can be useful to use, just a case of working out the best way to use them ;)

He's a tool with the best humour, face and voice-over ever. Therefore he stays in my party.

When he ****ed at me for having to make one of the difficult decisions in the game, I just about lost all respect for him. He doesn't have the balls to make decisions himself, and when someone else gets pushed into a corner and has to make a difficult one themselves, he just pisses and moans regardless of the outcome.

Oh and when he finally does make a stand for himself, and something he believes in, he makes the decision of a ****ing 5-year old who had his favourite toy taken away.

**** you, Alistair.

I rather enjoyed getting his approval up to 100, flirting with him and then CRUSHING HIM by getting in the sack with Leliana and Zevran.

Alistair is nice.

Not so.

I can like him because he's nice.  However, he does not ever earn my respect.  I've come to have more respect for even Morrigan towards the end than I ever did or will for him.  If I dislike him it's because he does not understand the purpose of the order he professes to love so much.

A few people also seem to be touching on a point I avoided in the OP for obvious reasons - but yes, his childish behavior at certain points throughout, at one spot in particular drove me nuts and displayed the same short-sightedness that bothers me about Sten but Sten overall is a badass so he is forgiven... and I will leave it at that as the rest of my point belongs in spoilers

Aside from the smart ass comments, I think Alistair is one of the most realistically portayed character of the lot, and therefore my favorite. You can't expect someone to go through the blight and not be distraught or unsure or suffer, especially when it comes to the things that happen in the storyline. What's funny is that people complain about Alistair being a whiny ****, and the majority of those people will NOT stop crying about the littlest things they don't like about the game.

I do enjoy Alistair, but he annoyed me when I made the practical choice in Redcliffe and then later, in camp, he threw a hissy fit on me. Even though it was possible to talk him down, it still bothered me that he questioned my judgment, after forcing me to make every decision up until then, despite being the junior Grey Warden. I guess it goes to say something about how good the writing is that I could actually have an emotional reaction to Alistair's criticism.

I like him because he voluntarily chose to be the tank. It's usually a pain in the butt to find a tank.

I have no qualms with the character work, he is exceptionally well done, I really love the many dimensions of the characters and it took a second more thorough play through to fully appreciate the characters as a whole. Also, definitely, Alistairs VO is exceptional... this game deserved game of the year. In no way is this post belittling BioWare, I just found it interesting how popular Alistair is as a companion. As a character he is exceptional, the antithesis of the warrior hero.

It's a shame there's so much complaining on a Forum devoted to an outstanding game.

And I'm genuinely surprised to find Alistair perceived as whiny or weak. He's a bit sassy, from the first moment you see him, and his reaction to loss - say, over Duncan's death - seems fairly restrained. Any more and it'd be hard to find it believable.

Great dialog with him. Interesting backstory.

And he can Shield Bash.

I like him. I find him believable. He is what he is, with the background that he has.
Yes, he whines a bit in the beginning, but he knows it. And you know what? People do whine. For some, it doesn't mean anything. It's just a release. I suppose that's how I interpret Alistair, cause he's solid. Maybe a slight insecurity and unwillingness to take responsibility. But that's okay, since I'm in charge.

I'm still on my first run through. But since he and I are what we are (spoiler avoided, even if Ostagar is really early in the game), we're bonded. He's fixed in my party. Morrigan and Sten are too. Morrigan and Alistair maybe don't go perfectly together, but it seem to work out, so this is my party, for the whole way.
And actually, I think he might be a fixture on my second run as well.

His character is whiny and selfish, I agree whoever did his voice acting did a superb job though. I just used him as an aoe lure, and then kicked him for Loghain

I don't find him selfish. And Loghain isn't the ultimate incarnation of selfishness? After what he did? And you have no personal beef with that? Oh, no, Alistair being 'whiny' is so much worse.Image IPB
If I can help it: Loghain dies.

No real argument here. I'm just stating my roleplay position in game. (though I'm a bit puzzled that so many 'kids'(?) find AH scums so "cool" these days.)

It depends on the type of character I'm roleplaying. A kind-hearted must-help-everybody PC can easily become BFF /w love+ with Alistair, and I can see why so many females like him. When roleplaying as a character more willing to make harsher choices, or a member of the I Hate Everybody Brigade along with Morrigan, Sten, and Shale... Alistair comes across as incredibly weak and spineless. He is a character that argues with the PC constantly but then immediately backs down.

Overall, he is just a well-made character with plenty of flaws and lots of pluses. So no real complaints here.

I honestly did not find anything redeeming about him as a character.

His jokes are bad and his whining is even worse. It would be understandable if it was because of something that you and he really had no control over, but when he whines about your decisions because he refused to make any, then it just makes him out as weak.
