Yep.

A reunion was HEAVILY implied in the EC.

Headcanon it. Bioware left it for us.

Some people don't like cheesy reunions so it was for the benefit of all that it was left out.

I dunno if you're gonna grasp at straws like this you're better off at headcanonning Shepard been Indoctrinated.

Grasp at what straws? Shepard is alive, and the intention of the memorial scene in Destroy is to show that your LI believes you are still alive (straight from Bioware's mouth). What other conclusion is there to draw except a reunion? You don't have to use your imagination, just your common sense.

I want to SEE a reunion. I don't want to imagine one.

You see, the problem I have with a LI reunion scene is that it would only be included in the Destroy ending because it's highly implied in the EC that in that ending they reunite, but in the others they don't. My main Shepard, however, chose control and I use my head canon to pretend Shepard makes an android body for himself and reunites with Liara anyway, despite the scene that implies they don't (LI fully puts name plate in memorial, while in destroy ending she doesn't).

If they now add a long scene where Shepard reunites with his LI ONLY in the destroy ending...then it's going to be that much harder to ignore the scene missing from the control ending and make my own head canon about what happens. I'm sure there are others who have a similar control head canon as well, so for everyone to be happy, there would need to be some sort of reunion in control as well, but there won't be because that's not what Bioware is going for in control.

Right now, everything is vague enough so that everyone can imagine what they want in their ending.

I look at Control a little differently. The entity that exists contains the memories and the understanding and goals of Shepard, but it is not Shepard, even while Shepard is a component of it. Sure, it could create a synthetic body if it wants to, and maybe it would for some purposes, but the LI? I have difficulty seeing how the LI would accept it, especially Liara. Even if Liara could join with it (unlikely, given that there's no backstory that I'm aware of that lets Asari meld with machines), what's there is vastly larger, vastly greater than the Shepard she knew, and the parts that aren't Shepard are going to be.. alien.

Of course, it's a matter of interpretation. I'm only one voice of many. But for me, Destroy being the only way that Shep actually survives makes sense to me..... though, with Control, something that occurs to me just now is that I could easily see Liara doing what she can over the following years to convert herself to a synthetic life form, knowing that in the end, she could be with Shepard, not in the conventional sense, but in every way that really matters. Yes, I could easily see that from her, specifically. That's headcanon too, I think :)

Like I said, everything is vague enough so that everyone can imagine their own version of what happens after the ending, take for example our different Control head canons (BTW, yours is interesting as well, I might combine it with mine :D), if they make the events more specific, it's going to be harder to do that and Bioware won't be able to satisfy everyone.

I heard all these points adding up before, the indoctrination theory has more points than this reunion theory though.
But please continue to use your imagination about stuff that didn't happen.

I just hope we don't have to wait until 2014 to find out more in ME4. I can wait, but 2 years would be a bit much.

When they do a ME4, if it's post-ME3 in the timeline, then I think they'll pretty much *have to* go with Destroy as the choice... the other options leave a lot less story room, and besides, if they do decide to carry on with Shep, they've pretty much boxed themselves in.

If they do keep Shep as the protagonist in ME4* then I think those of us wishing for more closure will get it in the best possible way. :)

(* yes, yes, I know, Bioware has said it's not going to happen.. but then again, it'll be a year before they even start writing the thing, and between then and now, things/staff/decisions can change... and they do listen to fan feedback, at least sometimes... and surely even they can see, and parent EA can see that they'll sell a lot more copies if they do)

One of the goals for the Extended Cut, as part of addressing player feedback, was to provide more time with the love interest, and more opportunity for players to say goodbye to them and provide additional moments of connection between them. We did this in several ways:

  • Shepard can now actually say goodbye to the love interest when they are split up at the conduit run.
  • When Shepard sees flashbacks of important characters during the final decision, the flashbacks are now variable based on your playthrough – so your love interest can appear as one of the flashbacks, providing another moment of reflection between Shepard and that character.
  • A memorial scene was added, partly to show a close bond between Shepard and the love interest. The scene is variable, and if Shepard has a love interest in a given playthrough, it will be that character who places Shepard’s name on the memorial wall.
  • You may notice that in the “Shepard lives” ending, the love interest hesitates to place Shepard’s name on the wall, and instead looks up as though deep in thought. This is meant to suggest that the love interest is not ready to believe Shepard is dead, and the final scene reveals they are correct. As the Normandy lifts off, there is hope that the love interest and Shepard will again be together.

I still want to see Kaidan take my Shepard to the hospital like Shepard did for him.

Edit: You know it would be great to see John and Kaidan at Shep's retierment home on Itai'sei that he got from Pinnical station. Might as well put that DLC to some use.

Oooookay, I really shouldn't take the bait, but I will.

Evidence there will be a reunion:

Premise 1: The Shepard breath scene is canon for high-EMS Destroy.
Premise 2: The Shepard breath scene would not have any purpose if it was put in there to suggest he takes a breath and then dies or never find him.
Conclusion 1: It is canon that Shepard lives in high-EMS Destroy.

Premise 1: Your LI believes you are alive.
Premise 2: Your LI, and everybody else, knows you entered the Citadel through the beam.
Premise 3: The slide of the Citadel, both smoldering and rebuilt, shows the beam still exists.
Premise 4. They will enter the beam to search for Shepard.
Premise 5: Shepard is within 200 yards of the spit-out points of the beam.
Conclusion 2: They will find Shepard after entering the beam.

Premise 1: Neither Shepard nor the LI will die in some horrible and unexpected way before meeting up.
Premise 2: They will want to meet up.
Conclusion 3: They will meet up.

Please provide your evidence that I am being naive and that a reunion is not the logical outcome of high-EMS Destroy. Or continue to insult people without evidence.

/bait off

Hm, but Hackett says that we have to honor those who died for our future when your LI is touching the name plate. IF you don't read the forum, you could also think that Shepard is one of those dead people. The breath scene could be some symbolic scene, like f.e. a last breath in freedom.

I think that as long as we see Shep moving, that she's going to survive. With the average human, that would be in doubt, but remember, you're talking about a person that's been heavily augmented, and that we've seen, multiple times apparently die and get shocked back to life (by, I assume, her augments)... and her bleeding injury that she collapses from right before the platform lifts her, she heals from enough, in a very short time, to be able to get up and even (albeit limping) actually run.

No, Shep is too damn tough to let a little explosion kill her. Anyone else, yes, but not her. So, if she starts breathing *again*, up there in the ruins of the citadel, I'd say she's pretty much going to survive her injuries and heal way faster than anyone else has a right to!

But, like you, I would have preferred to see it made more explicit. But I'm ok with it as it is.

Yeah even with the implants I was thinking that they'd possibly be failing or at least damaged due to the blast taking out synthetics- I'd have thought that would extend to Sheps implants, or at least some of them anyway. If that's the case then there's still the possibility she'd be fighting one heck fo a fight for her life due to her wounds :(

Ah well, headcanon mode: engaged!

You're looking at the scene knowing about the breath scene already. Imagine watching everything for the first time: at the time you are watching the memorial you are SUPPOSED to think Shepard is dead. Then boom, last thing is the breath scene, so anyone not reading the boards/seeing it for the first time will think the final word is : SURPRISE  he's alive!

But note that it shows Mordin and Thane and someoneelseiforget, but not Shepard. It's another supportive hint. But yes, if the player isn't paying attention, he could easily assume that Shep is dead. But then, the prize goes to those willing to put in the effort, as it should be :)

The main problem I had was that you can imply all you want that something will happen, but unless it is actually shown to have happened it is still up to debate or "speculate" if you will.

I myself cannot choose control or synthesis so those are non-factors to me.  Refusal, regardless of what was meant by including it does, at least to me, seem like a not so subtle insult to the players who wanted it.  Unless they wanted it simply for a real failure option then they did get what they wanted.  I, like many others, view the ending for destroy very differently from what is implied.

For myself, my Shepard is forever buried in rubble waiting and hoping that someone comes for him and wondering whether or not he was successful or if he failed in the end.

That is what my "imagination" is forced to come up with.  I saw and understood the hints that that is not what happened, but in the end since I do not know for certain through scenes within the game I cannot see it another way.

That is the true tragedy of the ending of Mass Effect 3 to me originally and with extended cut that the player is forced to think up the ending rather than knowing for certain.  Some people like that and some people do not.  I just happen to be one that does not like it.

If it was an ending I did not want I could move on from it almost immediately because at least I know what happened.  Since I do not know it is a lingering issue to me.  I will get over it over time and will even probably play the game again at some point.  But as it stands it is just a missed opportunity.

Regardless of how I feel about the ending, I do want to thank Bioware overall for the experience of the Mass Effect saga.  I just wish that I could have left the series on the high note I wanted to.

While I agree that the ME2 romances got shafted throughout the game, and have said so all along, this kind of makes me hope that BioWare never adds anything to them, simply because the amount of entitlement here is literally making me sick.

Honestly, what gives you the right to demand an outright punishment for anyone who doesn't pick Destroy? What we have now is fair to ALL endings. You want to make one ending clearly the best ending and make every other ending worse in comparison. How is this fair? Honestly.

For the record. A romance DLC that adds more throughout the game and gives you a chance to say goodbye to even Miranda, Jack, Steve, Traynor, or Jacob? Fine. A romance DLC that punishes me for not picking Destroy? Not fine.

Which is why they're probably going to do it properly later on. I'd much rather have a DLC or better later than a single pic now.
