I think, but am not sure, that it has to do with the updated EMS rating is being counted on from there. If you start later you will be stuck with your old EMS score.

I thought it was becuase the next save you would have would be right after being hit by the beam...but seconds before that it clears up the squadmates not being there issue.

However, I wish they made it easier to make saves during the last mission; you are pretty much at the mercy of autosaves. And now I can quote TIM's speech at the end verbatim because of how many times I went through it to experience the endings.

   More play time of ME3 recorded by origins makes him look good and makes the EC look like a outstanding success. (Look, Look all those players that hadn't touched ME3 in months are now playing it that much longer! They love it! DLC money here we come!)

It's the EMS. When you start the Cerberus mission, your EMS is locked in, it's the last chance you get to turn in any sidequests and complete any significant squadmate conversation.

There is also a few new scenes on Earth :| At least I know of 1 for sure.

Probably also because if you pick the "Citadel: the Return" mission save, you'll miss the bit with the Normandy picking up the squadmates. And you can't save on Earth.

If you've got a save just before going to Earth and you've got plenty of EMS, that would probably be ideal though.  But many people may not have such a save.

the EMS is calculated differently now and it locks down at Cronos station. That's why. It was announced.
