Hey Bioware,
The news of a DragonAge mac version is very cool. As a long time Mac user I can attest that I would love to have more games to run natively. Most mac gamers prefer to game on the mac but are forced into rebooting into windows due to the lack of any AAA titles less than a couple years old on the mac platform. With the major exception to the rule being games from Blizzard.

Unfortunately I already bought the windows version, because like many mac users I use windows/boot camp for gaming. Perhaps if you had let people know that you intended to release an OSX version when you released the PC version (surely you knew) you would sell more copies and make Mac development more worthwhile (see Aspyr). I imagine most of us would have been willing to wait a few months.

Anyway, thats my two cents. I would much rather have had a mac version but as I already own the PC version I will not repurchase.

If the port runs fine, I might even be tempted to buy it again. Although, that would be pure luxury, wouldn't it? Oh well... *throws a coin*

Well I am another to vote for: LET US KNOW! I would have waited for the Mac version also. Instead I purchased the PC version. Now I may purchase the Mac version regardless (that falls right into BIOWARE's plan the whole time doesn't it!). I realise it's a cider port... I am OK with that, just not thrilled. I know it won't run as good as on my windows partition, but how I hate rebooting everytime I want to play something... and DA:O has caused me to reboot a lot since release day!

I see Digital D/L. I am of an older generation and Digital D/L is not my style. Is there going to be a retail DVD version also?

It should be interesting to see how it runs. It's not a real port...it uses the Cider compatibility layer, which sometimes works great and is sometimes...not the best. Think Wine on Linux...it's great when it works, but even then you don't always get the greatest performance out of it.

Interesting, I dint know it was a cider port. I guess in the end I don't know why they are doing it if they are going to do it half ass. Frankly I would rather just reboot my computer than play a crappy port of anything. After all its not that hard to install or run bootcamp and then you get stellar performance. I am a realist and I understand that for some reason, the economics just don't support the development of mac software for anyone but Blizzard apparently. But it is too bad, because releasing a crappy port can potentially turn off many would be bioware fans from future ports. Because as any experienced gamer knows, we ALWAYS blame the publisher and not the hardware.

Well, truth to be told Cider is not that bad. Actually, it's often better than some "real" ports and it definitely beats other solutions like Crossover Games. Some Cider games run surprisingly well. Also, Dragon Age is not too demanding on the graphics side, so the losses through Cider might not be too bad. I'm not sure how good multicore support works in Cider games, I hope good, because this seems to be a major factor for DA's performance. Of course I'd still prefer a real port, and in the past Bioware ports like NWN have always been good enough (IIRC), but still, I'm optimistic that DA will be playable. Plus, since Cider games are basically the PC version inside a nice wrapper, I hope there won't be such a fiasko with patches like with many other Mac games (*cough* NWN2 *cough*).

Right, Cider isn't always a problem.  My main point was that if you already have Boot Camp set up to boot Windows you might be better off just going with the Windows version.  It may or may not be a better overall experience.  We'll have to see when it comes out and there are some professional reviews.

If we already own the PC version, will our DLC work in the Mac version? Or do we need to re-buy all of that as well?

Good question. I would also like to know if we can transfer our characters somehow.

I don't know about DLC, but I bet it still works if you log in with the same account.

Characters should be easy to transfer since they're just files on your hard disk. Put them on a USB drive, or mount your Windows partition from MacOS and copy them over that way.

If DLC works at all, it should work fine (the DLC is tied to account, not installation). You just need to log in to the same account as you used to purchase the DLC. You can ping Fernando if you truly need the official word, but I doubt he even knows; there are two digital versions that include the same various DLC content as the PC release, so I imagine it's being handled the same way as the other digital distributers (you'll get your registration code and be able to create your account here and in the game and then you can Do Stuff).

As noted, this is a Cider release (basically, the PC game wrapped in Wine to translate the Windows calls at runtime). Since the toolset likely uses some framework or other, it's a near certainty that you will never see a Mac toolset (you're getting the game only, and it's only available as a download).

I was actually also wondering if I had to buy the whole thing all over again. As I'm getting a Macbook Pro really soon...

I agree, If I knew I would have wait another few months (Weeks?) and get the Mac version.

Rebooting can be annoying at times.

Great game!

I'm pretty sure that the toolset does indeed use some version of the .NET framework.  I wonder if anyone's tried running it in Mono, yet.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster. My wife would kill me if she found out I'd bought it for Mac as well, after buying it on steam. Would be a really good gesture to let us existing owners who want to play on Mac do so without additional cost, but I'm not holding my breath. :)

Yeah, but they may not be exclusively .NET, and the model views certainly use DirectX.

Unless by some Act of God, I don't think it's likely to ever happen (of course, this goes for almost all toolsets when a game is ported-or "wrapped in emulation" in this case-to Mac). :-(

It's my understanding (limited, so keep asking) that this release isn't being published by EA and you're going to have to pay full price.

Really, you don't get the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 versions free with the purchase of the PC edition, so it's not that big a scam to charge you for another copy (it is for the amount of effort put into it and the support given it and to have a Mac OS X-compatible logo sticker and price tag put onto what is for the most part Wine, but what can you do).

Well I already plan on buying it. My only worry is that it is tested on an ATI4870 card. I have gotten my PC version to run under Crossover Games, but I had terrible black flicker. I want to know that it WILL in FACT run on an 08Mac Pro w/ ATI4870, and that it will be supported before I lay my money down... on Monday...

Great news but another vote for a heads-up on the Mac version. I already got my PC version thinking no Mac version would be released but would much rather have waited for a Mac version. Perhaps if there if BioWare could honor the PC license I would be willing to pay a reduced price for just the install media at least to show support for Mac development.

I definitely want to buy this, I have the xbox version because I recently switched to Mac and don't have a PC that can run DA or boot camp running on my Mac. But I'm going to wait to see a few things before I buy, namely if previously purchased DLC transfers and more importantly if we'll be able to use the mods the community is making.

I found out today that the Mac version will have SecuROM DRM, which is a dealbreaker for me.

The download version will, which is quite understandable, because there's obviously no way to use a disk check there. You can't expect a digital download to have no copy protection at all, can you?
I hope (and assume) there will also be a boxed version which comes with the same disk check as the PC version.

The ONLY reason I would buy the MAC version of this game is if it came with the same quality of DA:O toolset / editor as the  PC. I felt a bit cheated when I was robbed of the ability to use the NWN2 editor...Amazon.com lied to me in the product discription...:crying:.
