DAO ganks internet connection?

Has anyone else experienced this?

When running DAO in the background (windowed mode) I often get a "your connection has been lost" message which I close, but my Internet connection gets real flaky and I cannot access other web sites until I close DAO.

Just curious if anyone else noticed that.

Other computers in my home NOT running DAO all access the Internet fine. And they all go through the same router.

So, my theory is if the DAO connection is lost, it somehow ganks you network card/internet connectivity.

Almost the same experience... Difference is that I am not running it in windowed mode.

Makes it tough to use the wiki when testing scripts!

Copy protection scheme? I have no idea.

I am curious if Bioware/EA intentionally ganks the network connection if a connection is lost between the DAO client and their server. If so, that IS intrusive.

How can you blame the ISP? The other 7 internet capable devices in my house work fine. It is just the machine running DAO that drops its connection.

Close DAO and the internet connection is back to normal. Very suspicious.

I have my Desktop quite far away from my router and am connected through wireless (wires across the living room makes my girlfriend cry) and i;m having no issues at all with browsing, streaming etc. I've even watched BBC I player while runnign DA. So i don;t think the common denominator is the game. But i can;t give any advice, sorry.

What sort of software anti-virus/firewall are the people who have this problem running?

XP firewall and avast anti-virus. I doubt that has anything to do with it though. I never lose my connection and those two are always up. It pretty much HAS to be something DAO is doing.

It seems like DAO somehow assumes control of the network card and does not like to share with other apps. (tested with firefox and chrome)

Existing connections (utorrent download of ubunti iso) are not affected. New FTP connections are not affected. Just new http connections.

Same problem. Hopefully this could be minimized in a later patch.

I'm constantly ALT+TAB browsing with Dragon Age running minimised, often when it's doing menial tasks like auto running from Redcliffe Village entrance to the town centre. It's currently minimised at the moment and I'm not having a single issue with it.

I'm curious what the common denominator with the people having issues is though, are you using the same web browser/anti-virus/firewall/operating system and service packs?

Since you listed you've tried FireFox and Chrome georage, try Internet Explorer and see if that's any different.

Same except my wireless router is now useless and resetting didn't help.  Had to switch to a wired backup while I wait for a RMA.  Could be entirely coincidental, but I did experience a lot of slowdown in firefox on the box that has DA:O.  It was worse after I exit out of the game.  Pages took forever to load if at all sometimes.  This was only on the machine with DA.  My netbook was running fine with no connection drops until the wireless router went ballistic.

On the DA:O machine I have the following installed: XP sp3, zone alarm, avg and firefox.  The router was a belkin g wireless, and I have an onboard nic--whatever's on the Asus M3A78-CM mobo.

Don't worry folks, it's just EA that collects info about you and your computers, as per the deal you have agreed to after the update on the "privacy" policy.

I also notices strange network behavior, while running DAO. Can't say the connections just disappears, but dramatic slowdowns occurs...
If someone says it stuns the router ("flashing lights"), then it could probably point us to the problem with many (and I mean A LOT) small packets sent to some servers... or even corrupted packets... AND, it could probably cause infamous "You are not connected to the internet" error, or "can't access your online storage profile'....

NOW, I think Bioware/EA should investigate this, because it sounds like really a DAO related problem.

P.S. personally, I am mostly uneffected by this problem, but it would be nice to have this resolved.

I remember that "update". So, in essence, is DA:O just a well-wrapped hunk of spyware that we have willingly paid for and installed on our computers?

I'm sorry, my only comment is "no comment".
I have myself been absent to the best of my ability from the DA:O servers since that day, and consequently I have avoided being asked about agreeing to the new "privacy " policy... :P

I've asked both EA and BioWare about this, no reply.
The National Data Inspectorate in my country advised me NOT to agree to this, however.

Can those having troubles try disabling all of the online features from in-game, and see if DAO still causes issues? All of the online features can be disabled from the in-game options screen, and you should be able to narrow it down to a particular type of online usage. If it still happens with all in-game online disabled, odds are it is the DAUpdater service (required for DLC) that is misbehaving, and disabling that in your windows control panel should then resolve it (though then your DLC wouldn't work).

If anyone does narrow this down to a particular feature/service, please post the results so BioWare has a chance to fix whatever is wrong!

Would a packet sniffer like Wireshark give enough information about something like this?  I could try running it just to see what all is going on behind the scenes, but I wouldn't be able to use my original (now non functional router.)   I still see some slow down with my wired backup, but it is nowhere near noticable like before.

I'll try disabling some stuff as per van Herk's post when I get back home.

Interesting, I thought my router was on the way out - now i think about it the recent internet connectivity issues i've been having are occurring when running DA.

I can't be certain but i think this has only been since the second patch... I'll do some investigation tonight.

Glad I came across this thread, I was seriously considering a new router...

Its just EA taking over your computer with stealth tactics. Best to just drone along and accept it. Otherwise they will have somebody call round to "have a chat about it" now that they have collected so much personal info on you, including your IP address. Read the "new" privacy policy. and ask yourself why was this given to us after we had purchased our game and had been playing a few weeks.. It was because in the policy you are told you either use their online system thus aggreeing to let them do this or you can never use the system to get download content or support and such. They only put this to us after we purchased because we were less likely to say no now that we have the game and want to get all our DLC and such. They put us in a tight spot where we had a very bad hand to play regarding aggreeing to their snooping. So I wonder just how intrusive this snooping goes and just how much it is affecting your system? Very dishonest way to go about things if you ask me.

I have a variation of the problem. If I run DAO then sleep Windows 7 64bit, when I wake the computer up, eacore or daupdater are trying to connect and I sometimes don't get my connection back. If I sleep without playing DAO, then I don't have this problem. If I restart the router, it is fine again.

If nobody overtakes me, I will try to investigate DAO-generated traffic on saturday (simply don't have time to work, study and play at the same time =))
