Hey guys. I recently finished a playthrough of the ending with the EC material, but I never had much of a problem with the original endings in the first place - I enjoyed the core concepts, ideas and themes that they suggested, and was instead disappointed by the poor execution of them. And while I recognized the issues with the original ending, I enjoyed the core ideas so much that they wern't much of a problem to me, so the original ending was about a 6/10 for me.  But the extended cut fixed a majority of the easily avoidable flaws in the execution, by fixing nearly all of the plotholes while providing more explanations about the Catalyst and giving more closure to the player. It wasn't perfect, since the slideshow section felt a little cheap to me and it still could've done with a little more closure IMO. But I found it MUCH more enjoyable, and left ME3 satisfied rather than simply accepting of the ending. It raised it to a solid 8/10 for me.

Yet while I was watching the more in-depth explanation for the Catalyst (which I found to be EXACTLY what I wanted), I kept thinking about this idea for a different explanation for the Catalyst. I don't know why, but I've had this vague idea long before the EC and I've wanted to put it in written form to share to anyone else who is interested. But the EC finally gave me the inspiration I needed to do it. This alternative explanation leads to the exact same ending options as before, but with a new meaning given to them. I'm not saying that this should replace the canon ending or explanation, it is literally an alternative one that I have come up with. I don't believe it to be any better or worse than the originals, but something about it I find more... Personally satisfying.

Anyway, I present this alternative Catalyst explanation and origin to you, in the form of a differing conversation between it and Commander Shepard. Enjoy! :)

Shepard: "...I need to stop the Reapers... Do you know how I can do that...?"
The Catalyst: "Perhaps. Now that the Crucible has been constructed, a solution can be decided upon."
Shepard: "But you're the Catalyst... You're the solution..."
The Catalyst: "That is what you were lead to believe. But that is not the truth."
Shepard: "Then what are you...?"
The Catalyst: "Not what. Who."

The Catalyst begins to walk ahead of Shepard, who follows behind him.

The Catalyst: "I am the final construct. I am the last and only remaining manifestation of my creator. And I was created as the catalyst for change."
Shepard: "...So you're just an AI...?"
The Catalyst: "In as much as you are just an animal. I embody the collective intelligence of my creator. And the resolution he wished to bring to the endless cycle."
Shepard: "...So you did have a creator...Who was this...?"
The Catalyst: "The one who predicted the endless conflict before it had begun."

There is a pause for a moment while Shepard tries to understand what he is saying.

The Catalyst: "My creation was not intended. My creator had been persecuted for it, and his initial plans and research around the Crucible were destroyed."
The Catalyst: "But he feared for the Reapers and their possibilities. He developed a new blueprint in secret, and preserved it in hiding before his execution. And in every cycle, these blueprints have been found and improved upon."
Shepard: "...Until we finished building the Crucible in this cycle..."
The Catalyst: "Precisely."

Shepard takes a moment for this information to sink in.

Shepard: "...But why did he need to make the Crucible? Why do the Reapers exist...?"
The Catalyst: "They had no choice. They had created the species of the galaxy for science, including your kind. The impact on their resources was far greater than expected. Their own mortality was needed for the birth of others."
The Catalyst: "Their solution to avoid death was extreme. His people gave the Reapers form, and he gave them function. It was not an easy decision on his part, but they saw it as a necessary as way to survive. Once every 50,000 years was an acceptable cost. And he agreed for some time."
The Catalyst: "But my creator began to see this as wrong. He believed that your kind and the others should be allowed to blossom without threat. That they should accept death for the future generations. And they killed my creator for saying this."
Shepard: "...So the Reapers are machines that preserve the... Gods?"
The Catalyst: "If that is what you wish to refer to them as."
Shepard: "...And these Gods wipe out the galaxy to... Survive?"
The Catalyst: "Correct."

The Catalyst begins to continue walking forward, with Shepard following.

The Catalyst: "And now that you have succeeded in constructing my creator's solution, the cycles can end permanently."
Shepard: "...How...?"
The Catalyst: "That is for you to decide."
