Why is it that control only works on Reapers and seemingly leaves all other synthetics? Meanwhile destroy doesn't discriminate and wipes out all synthetics?

How does a machine that is drafted up over many civilizations trying to destroy the Reapers have functions to control or synthesize them. Didn't they just want to destroy them to save themselves? ( They knew nothing of this synthetic/organic underlying conflict since no one else has made it as far as Shepard.) Control is a more believable option since some races may have wanted to control them.

The races were smart enough to design such a device but were too incompetent  to make documentation for the next civilizations to follow, to know how to build it and how it works.

So with synthesis, could any organic trigger such an event? or was it because Shepard had both synthetic/organic parts? If so then what if someone that was pure organic or synthetic had gone up there to make the choice?

Still how does shooting a tube or jumping into a beam fire the Crucible?

How is the Catalyst AI essential to firing the Crucible?
