Bioware,
I admit that you had done your effort, it is both good and bad news: good one, because you do care about your publicity and somehow about your customers after all. You have taken into account the fans feedback (although in a very selective way). Most of biggest glaring plotholes had been resolved, such as escaping Joker, the team member that end up on Normandy, Shepard is honoured by his team after his death (or “death” depending on EMS), and you attenuated the whole overly pessimistic tone of all endings: it does no longer feel like a nihilist nightmare, which was my main problem with the whole thing. You gave also some basic information or at least a shadow of it about other civilisations and party members’ whereabouts. That is very appreciable, since it makes the whole game playable again. I think that both you, Bioware and we, fans, can have some reason to think that the minimum of comprehension had been achieved and we managed to do a positive thing, both during those last 3 months.
However, still, I did not like some parts of it:
- synthesis did not and still it does not make any sense, logically seems irrelevant, but as there are some other endings, I can just ignore its existence
- Destruction ending, is in my opinion most appropriate, though not understandable (as asked numerous times before your EC release: why the hell the reapers allowed to be destroyed? that is not very logical.
The only ending making perfectly sense is a control ending (as a logical reaper preferred option – a bad solution of Shepard, galactic god) and your new “refusal” ending. Still the “refusal” ending lacks the link with EMS score in my opinion and it has overly negative tone (as if it was a mockery of the fans that requested it – yes, you “listened”).
Otherwise, you will enter into video gaming history your deus ex machine last choice, which will remain a bad practice to not be followed by future video games designers (Deus Ex Human Revolution designers made the same mistake wrt their game ending), the kid-Catalyst will remain the most despised “villain” of video games as he brings a feeling of disgust rather than anger.
I will not go into the analysis of the numerous incoherencies, omissions and so on in your ending, as I am tired of it, and it does not matter any longer. We know that it is the end: you will not improve the game anymore (maybe you will add some DLCs like you did in ME2, but that’s it) and we will not consider ME3 as “Opus Magna”.
Globally, I consider that your Mass Effect 3 is playable again, though it is a pity that it is more like a fallen angel, the game that might have become the legend, much alike to Baldur’s Gate series … ME3 will just remain a good game (still it is better than before, when it was intellectually unplayable, so, yes, I recognize your work effort and its result in form of positive progress!)
As for the bad side of the whole thing: I will think twice before buying another Bioware game; the whole ending controversy cost me some nerves, the whole nihilist stuff from the original vanilla game was a traumatic experience, I do not want to live that kind of experience in future with any game. I will read the reviews first (the ones of independent, amateur players, not of so called “professional reviewers”)
