There's just so many things wrong, big things, that BioWare just refused to fix. One of these things was, of course, the nature of the ending itself. They said that changing the ending meant it wouldn't be "their ending", and yet they changed quite a few things and made up some on-the-moment explanations in the EC without much trouble. That wasn't "their ending". And either way, this story isn't about making the writers happy, but the customers. We pay the writers for a story we will enjoy.
But even still, that wasn't my biggest gripe with the EC because I knew that wouldn't change. My biggest deal was that it lacked any sort of epilogue pertaining to the individual characters, and most of the storylines went unfinished. Examples include;
- Where were the Normandy survivors? Will they make it home, since the Relays are inoperable and they certainly lack the fuel to make it all the way to another star cluster?
- What about Tali and her dreams of owning a home? Joker and his reaction to EDI's destruction? Garrus and his return to Palavan (and maybe his family)? Liara and her return to Thessia? There was no conclusion for the characters, and Mass Effect is heavily character driven.
- I found peace between the Geth and Quarians, but I also destroyed the Geth in the end. What does this mean for Rannoch?
- I sabotaged the Genophage. So... um... now what? Are the Krogan just going to let themselves slowly die out? That doesn't seem like them. I imagine they would feel ridiculously betrayed and wage all-out war on the galaxy, only to be put down like dogs. Where's that conclusion?
- How will all these fleets return home? It'll take some of them decades to reach their home planets, assuming that they even have enough fuel. Will the Relays ever be repaired? What about the Citadel, as it seems in only halfway-blown-to-hell shape?
In the end, Hackett's little speech at the end did provide enough closure to ensure that the galaxy that I have come to love will continue on and everything will, eventually, return to normal. That was my hope for the Extended Cut - that it would seal some plot holes, and that it would make another playthrough of the series bearable because I wasn't fighting towards inevitable destruction and confusion. But those are just the words of one man, and I still have questions about how this is possible, and what the results of my actions as Commander Shepard will be, and what will happen to the characters that BioWare has masterfully developed for over half a decade.
I'm satisfied with the Extended Cut, because it contained the terrible writing of the ending to the ending itself. Before, the poor ending plagued the entire series and made it not worth playing in the slightest, but now I eagerly look forward to rolling another Shepard. But I feel like it could have done so much more, especially with three months of work. BioWare has salvaged Mass Effect, but they have hardly concluded the trilogy.
The Extended Cut salvaged Mass Effect but...
