It always seemed odd that it took higher EMS to unlock Synthesis over the other two options, but at an ever higher EMS Shepard lives after the destroy ending. I was expecting the EC to basically make that higher EMS survival possible for the other two options as well. Would that have been better?

For example the catalyst gives you slightly different options, something like these:
Synthesis- Shepard is badly damaged by the process but also becomes synthesised and the gasp scene plays but with a slight green glow reflecting off the armour.

Control- Using the machine injures shepard but creates an AI copy of shepard to control the reapers, a similar scene as the gasp plays but instead shepard is on a reaper tech throne with the illusive man style eyes that you gain briefly in the original control scene. Implying that shepard is connected to the AI.
