So, I just picked up the Ultimate Edition of Dragon Age Origins (DA:O, Awakening + All DLC). I played part-way through the game on my brother's machine way back when, but I imagine there's been substantial progress on the Mod front since then. So before I was plunging back in, I was wondering:

What are the best mods to improve DA:O's gameplay balance?
What are the best mods to improve DA:O's graphics?
What are the best mods to add additional DA:O characters?
What are the best mods to add additional DA:O quests and adventures?
What are the best mods to add additional gameplay features?

In short, what should I have installed before I load the game up and begin to play?

I recommend
"Morrigan Restoration Patch Dialog Fixpack"

It fixes some bugs, has some nice new scenes with morrigan, especially if in romance and it makes some other things more logical.

I truly like it and I truly recommend it. I dont know about the other mods because this is the only one I have installed.

-Gameplay: JX Dragon Age Extended (3 new classes!), Awakening in the OC, Combat Tweaks, Advanced Tactics, Advanced Party, Advanced Quickbar, and Full Combatant Dog. Optional: Skip the Fade.

-Graphics: Dragon Age Redesigned, No Helmet Hack, and Neutral Teeth. There are too many cosmetic and custom armor/weapons mods to list here, just browse around dragonagenexus and BSN.

-Additional Characters: Ser Gilmore and Quests & Legends.

-Quests and adventures: Quests & Legends, Dark Times, Tombs of the Undead, Pints & Quarts Tavern and other mods by the same author, Temple of Vulak, and Alley of Murders.

-Other: Zevran Dialogue Fix, Morrigan Restoration Patch, ZevranASAP,
Winter Forge, Universal Dye Kit, Add Any Item Visual Deluxe, Wolfshop, and Dark Ritual Deleted Scene.

Improved Atmosphere is really great, but it has a bucketload of compatability issues with other mods so I can't recommend it.

The realistic bodies, better sex scenes and erect penis mods are awesome. :D You can guess what they do!

A quick list :
- For improved gameplay take "Extra Dog Slot" to have your hound with you as a 4th companion
- Advanced Quickbar will let you have up to 40 quickbar slots - very handy for mages
- Lock Bash allows classes other than rogues to open locked chests with risk of damaging the contents (cf NWN)
- Ser Gilmore NPC adds another companion and associated quests
- Tal Storage chest adds a storage chest in your camp - useful to keep items for future use and clear up your inventory
- Qwinn's unofficial fix DA:O pack corrects a wide range of bugs
- Great tongue in cheek quest mod is "classic Week" - no voice acting by the script can be very funny

Finally - look at http://dragonage.nex...ods/categories/ for a wide range of available mods

Since you’re specifically looking for mods to install before you start a new game, then these are, in my opinion, the ones you would do well to use:

* Advanced Tactics. I cannot recommend this one highly enough.
* DA Rules Fixpack.
* CC Chargen Pineappletree Friendly File. Combines three character generator tweaks into one easily installed mod.
* JB3Textures. It doesn't add or change textures so much as create very high-res versions for the original game's graphics. I’ve not tried Improved Atmosphere yet, and Dragon Age ReDesigned also looks interesting.
* Morrigan Restoration Patch. One of the must-have mods for DAO, in my opinion Ditto the Zevran Dialogue Fix.
* Peasants Edition. For those of us don't have the Collector's Edition and, therefore, don't have the CE items. This mod adds items with the same stats as the CE ones, but new names and descriptions. Don't forget to manually add in DLC items that are "free" (i.e. don't need authorization)!
* Icons Project. A purely cosmetic mod that adds new, and more accurate, icons for items in one's inventory.
* Universal Dye Kit.

I recommend using the Mod Manager to install and check the compatibility of mods. The above all work well together for me, however.
