"Mass Effect is art" and "we respect the team's artistic vision" are some of the phrases used many times, since the backlash of the ME3 ending. "Art" is of course a rubber term and have different meaning to each person, but let's go with the general idea popularized by Marcel Duchamp: as long as we consider something art - then it is art. This trivialize the question and thereby the whole discussion of whether or not something like Mass Effect can be considered art, but also opens the possibility to ask another question: why is this an artistic achievement then?

In which ways can Mass Effect be considered something worthwhile to culture, thought and ideas, rather than just a mere 40 hours screensaver for the mind? How does it utilise its media? The audience? How does graphics, lighting, span and depth of the game contribute to make us think and convey some sort of message? Is there a message at all?

This is not just about the ending of the third game - there are after all hours upon hours of gameplay in the series. I'm curious to see how the community perceived the games, why did it react so strongly to these artworks.
