Okay, first off, I should probably make this clear: I love what the EC did with the original endings. However, I still think that the concept behind those endings is just ridiculous. They fit well into the ME3 atmosphere, but lets not forget that Mass Effect is still a trilogy and compared to what was shown in the first game, the endings don't fit at all.
For example, look at the Lord of the Rings trilogy. If you showed the complete first movie to somebody and then you showed him the ending of the third movie, it would still make sense and fit well into the overall story arc. The motives and plot was made clear in the first movie - destroy the ring and stop Sauron. The main characters managed to do just that, uniting several nations in the process, finally destroying the plot device and killing the big bad.
So, image that now instead of LotR, you have Mass Effect. You ask/force/hypnotize somebody to play the first game and then show him one of the endings to the third(let's say Synthesis, cause it seems to be the lovechild of the devs). "Yes, we're going to stop the Reapers when they attacks by uniting the nations of the universe and triumphing ov- HOLY ANDRASTE WHY IS EVERYBODY GLOWING GREEN". It's like if LotR ended with Frodo throwing the ring in the volcano and then finding out that EVERYBODY'S MADE OF CHEESE AND THE RING WAS A MAGIC PRETZEL ALL ALONG.
So, the EC is really, really good - it fixes the mess that the original endings created. However, the basic concept behind those endings is broken and doesn't fit well within the story, plot, atmosphere, general ideas etc etc etc that were shown to be the basis of the Mass Effect franchise.

Nice analogy:)
Although sythesis is mentioned in ME1, just by you know the bad guy (Saran, cough). Honestly in 3 sythesis is the one that I felt was the most out of place. TIM set up the idea of control pretty well in 3 and it was kind of hinted at in 2. But sythesis is mentioned in 1 and then not really foreshadowed in 3 at all. So while jumping from 1 to 3 someone would be like, why am I now agreeing with the bad guy and what is this thing about control you speak of.
But then again that is kind of the feeling I get with both control and sythesis.<_<
