As I said, this game IS incredible, which I have come to expect from BioWare altho this is my first ever "fantasy" type game with dragons and swords and stuff. However after KOTOR and Mass Effect I had to get it :).

My only gripe is this.... we get to see all the various armours and wepons on our "team", even the different crystals for Shale,.......... but NOT the dog.   We can see the differences in the paint  sure, but why dont we see the collar??.

If you can make armours for hunams, elves, and dwarves then why not collars for the dog?

I would really appreciate an answer to this please. It may sound a little petty but I feel that the dog has missed out.

Thx :)

Your thread is way more important than all the other threads on all the forums. You definitely deserve a response from the lead designer of Dragon Age: Origins.

Thx guys,.... not sure what your posts meant but it helped keep it on the front page :), so TYVM :).

I am hoping to hear from BioWare......... hint hint........... PLS. You can have people wear armour but no collars for dogs, even tho we equip them?.

I have a Rottweiller named Petra, a female of 10 yrs, and I give the game dog her name even tho the game dog is a male. It was surprising to find that a mage in the circle tower had her name :). It;s not a common name, altho "you" pronounced it paytra rather then petra, but so what.

My "Petra" has a wonderful thick black leather studded collar and I want to know why you, BioWare, did not allow for collars to be seen on the dog???

If this is your only complaint, then I believe Bioware has done a pretty good job.

What kind of response would you even want? An apology? A reason why this was one of the hundreds of other things thrown out due to budget and time constraints? A reassuring, half-empty hint that it may get added in the future?

I'm not trying to sound like an ass (ok, maybe a little ;) but I just don't think you'd get a satisfying answer, even if a developer did reply.

I know I wouldn't, with my gripe against lack of halfling monks in the game...

They have done an incredible job, as I said,,,,, I just wanna know why the dog missed out.

In countries where dogs are used for hunting they have protective collars and even chestplates.... If Bioware can make all these armours for humans, elves and dwarves,,,,,, why not a range of collars for the dog?... which mind you we can buy and equip,,,,,, but CANNOT see.......

I suspect (and keep in mind, I was in no way involved with the devlopment of this game), that it is the same reason there are no cloaks, horses, climbing, swimming, spears, more romance options, PC voice acting, jumping, er... halfling monks, etc.  BW could put all of these things in the game.  But they didn't, because the list of features in the game design document gets slowly weeded down during the development process.  This is the same with any game ever made, because if this doesn't happen, then the game would never get made.

Time and budget constraints - that is the most likely answer.

You are correct Sir.

I understand that but what you are talking about is something this game is completely devoid of. I however am talking about collars,,,,,,, that this game HAS...... you buy them, equip the but CANNOT see them, You DO get to see the different "paint jobs" that you can give your dog.... but NO collars.

Because to you (and I) it may seem like a trivial task for a programmer/modeler to add a given feature.  There may be clipping issues, animation issues, conflicts with scripting, constraints inherent in the engine that would have to get modified -- all hypothetical, to be sure, but believable (speaking with a smidgin of experience, here).  Technical difficulties, even if they are small(ish) ones, add time and money to a project.

What is more believable?  That a team of RPG fanatic game developer nerds sat at a meeting and decided that cool looking dog accessories was, while simple to add, was a stupid idea?  Or that it, along with hundreds of other somewhat trivial (but time consuming, nonetheless) features was towards the bottom of the list, and just didn't make the cut due to time?

Oh come on........ really,,,, you think that there would be more issues with clipping and animation on a dog collar that with all the armours this gamne offers for its Hero and his/her team?

As for "trivial".... they, BioWare, DECIDED to give us a canine companion.... so why not design the collars that , as I said we but and equip but cannot see. They also gave us a Stone companion which we have to but and equip various crystals for,,,,,,,,, but we get to see those............

So why did the dog miss out?........... thats all I want to know.

You'd be getting the same answer as anyone else: Your request was either deemed to be an unnecessary "legacy" feature, or it would've required too much effort and/or cost. Just like animated hair, proper tooltips, proper epilogues, cloaks, more variety in clothing except for retextures, un-clown-like mage gear, etc. etc.

Thats a fair point, but my point is that this IS a part of the game,,,,,,, but a part we cannot see...... and I wanna know why. We see all the armours we buy for our team and the crystals for Shale, if you have that DLC... and we even see the different paint work for our canine companion.... but not the collars that we can buy and equip..... but CANNOT see.....

And this goes back to my first response. There is likely not going to be a satisfying answer to your question, even if a developer decided to chime in. I'm not denying that I wouldn't enjoy more stuff, I'm with you there. But rest assured, there is most certainly a reason, and it probably ultimately has to do with time/money. I doubt it has to do with sloppiness, forgetfulness, bad design criteria, and all the other stuff that developers are often accused of. But then again, I, too, am just speculating.

In any case, my hypotheticals are just to illustrate a point -- I doubt we will never know the exact chain of details that led to this particular feature getting cut from the finished game. I do know, for certain, that things can get much, much more complicated under the surface in ways that is often hard to imagine, when talking software development.

At least, with this game, we always have the hope of our pet features getting added later in a patch, expansion, DLC, or user created mod. And dog collars, at least, seems more realizable than many others.

From responses to similar issues I've seen from the developers and general knowledge of the game development process, let me explain it to you:

Of course it would be nice if collars showed up. It would be great if every single piece of equipment had a unique model and tons of unique animations. There can always be MOAR of everything in a game like this. What developers have to do, once they have the core story arc complete and are satisfied with the game engine and the way the primary content plays, is prioritize the near-infinite list of added features, background content, etc. along with balance fixes, bug fixes and whatever originally planned content takes longer than expected (see: Shale).

So, the reason that collars aren't shown is the same reason that there are no cloaks, no [insert missing permutation of race/class/gender] NPC, and none of every other feature you can think of that is "missing" from the game. They didn't have time to get to it if they ever wanted to release the damn game.

At this point, I think balance and bug fixes are the main patching focus, and new content is constantly being worked on for DLC I'm sure, but I wouldn't expect random little graphical upgrades and niceties anytime soon unless some ambitious player figures out how to do it in a mod.

If this is your 1 and only complaint about the game, you must be thrilled. I have quite a long list, but this is still one of the best games I've played in a long time - only the games I love have this many tiny details I have a strong opinion on. If I don't like a game, there are usually a fairly small number of big reasons why I don't enjoy the gameplay and that's that. With Dragon Age, all my gripes are based on the fact that I love the game and want MOAR of all my favourite elements. Hopefully, as the toolset community takes off, we will start to see some proper content modules coming from 3rd parties. As much as I love DA:O, the idea of tons of quality content, with gameplay mods and balance changes to make it more of a 'hardcore' tactical RPG, would be 100x better. Even better would be if BW decided to make TOR a hardcore tactical pvp MMO, but that's a bit of a pipe dream ;)

Hi Laz,.... I am sure there IS a reason...... there always is.:) I just want to know what the reason is, or was. Don't give the the time and money thing tho... all those armours and weapons.... and no time or money for a collar or two? be serious. They had time and money for different paint jobs but not for collars?

I understand what your sayin mate but I have a question that I want answered.... and I may not like the answer but I wanna know why. Hopeully they will/could add collars later on....... either way I want an answer from BW

Well "Solistus1" if you have that many problems with this game I am sorry for you..... for I truely enjoy it aside from my 1 gripe which would sound pitiful to you I am sure. I hope you either find what you seek or stop playing. Whichever puts your mind at rest :)
