and thats Midnight :)

A collar goes around a dog's neck.

A necklace goes around a human's neck.

We get both in the game (being one of panther's main arguments).

We don't see the necklace on a human when equipped.

Why should we see the dog's "necklace"???

You might get more mileage by posting a Toolset mod request (on the Toolset forums), instead of trying to wrangle an answer from Bioware. There's already some good things available from modders, and many more things in the works. It wouldn't hurt to ask...

Gah! If I'd read this Thread first, I wouldn't have seen the need for
If Dragon Age were the Odyssey.

Apparently, Woody Allen was right: the difference between fiction and non-fiction is that fiction has to be believable.

Was verra unsure if this was a serious complaint or not...but oh well, I'll treat it as such anyway.

OP, just because you don't like the answers given, that doesn't mean they are not correct. The collar was most likely considered not worth the time effort to polygon, animate, and ambient.

Look at the many, many, many, many, MANY other threads regarding "WHY ISN'T X IN THE GAME?!" for the official developer whys. They're pretty much what I said above.

Educated guess:

By the time they realised that the dog model didn't have a collar, they were well into development - probably they'd done the animations already.

So, when they considered adding a collar to the dog, what were the associated costs and risks?

- Cost of redoing animations for the dog, at the very least ensuring that in all animations there was no lateral movement of the skin around where the collar was going to go (otherwise it would look like parts of the collar were moving up and down).

- Memory and GPU cost of rendering additional geometry and at least one or two extra materials to draw the collar. To avoid dogs becoming a dynamic memory allocation issue at runtime, probably each dog would pre-allocate enough memory for the most demanding/complex collar. This could add up in scenes such as the battle at Ostagar.

- Risks associated with switching geometry and/or textures to implement different collars.

War paint, by contrast, is a texture swap, and as such is guaranteed to have no additional memory or GPU cost to implement - just a different resource to load. In a development environment, it is not at all surprising that the benefit of this work - which wouldn't be appreciated by players who didn't take a dog with them - might not seem worthwhile.

By all means take this with a pinch of salt, because I'm a programmer rather than a texture artist or animator. But don't hold your breath for an "official" answer from Bioware.

The OP should not expect an answer from the devs.

However, I would suggest that Dog does deserve as much as the devs or modders can manage like more talents or, yes, even showing the collar. Why? Because Dog has no dialogue (apart from the barking in camp:)). That's why Dog won't be a regular in my group until I've worn out all the dialogue on the humanoids.

So, the devs don't need to respond, but I hope Dog will be in for some more development.

Dog may not have "dialogue" but he does have some pretty hysterical interactions with other party members.

So why did the dog miss out?........... thats all I want to know.

Since no one else is gonna say it:

Because no one cares.

Honestly, you think that Bioware should have wasted (yes, that is my opinion) time making separate collars for the dog when they could have been doing something more important?  I have nothing against collars that would be visible, but I'd rather have dozens of other visual improvements before even thinking about the fact that I can't tell what collar my dog is wearing.  Sorry, just no.  I can only hope that dog collars are pretty far down the list of planned improvements.  I'd take new sword, armor, or hat (oh, please, the hats) improvements before collars.  I'd rather they spend time on a few of the models which don't look as good at close range (hello, Sten) or fix some of the more grievous clipping issues with animations.

Now, I know you're trying to say that you like the game, but to be frank, to demand a response from Bioware on something so trivial is insulting to everyone involved.  Requests like this do nothing to improve the relationship between Bioware and the community.  I can only hope that the devs take the suggestion for what it's worth, which isn't really much.

(Note: Yes, I understand there is a strong chance this is a troll thread, but I hoped that some other person with this same "gimme gimme" attitude might read through and get the point before they start their own thread.)

I e-mailed a dev to get an answer to this pressing issue (OP you should have done this, so much easier, and you get a response every time!).

He said - "under guidance from the various anti-animal cruelty organisations across the globe it would be deemed cruel to "collar" the dog, we did fight this horrible accusation through the courts of human rights, (with the help of the chinese gov, on the proviso we have an option to eat the dog at player camp, should we be succesful in our campaign), but after 5 years of court appearances and $20mil in lawyer fee's we decided to revisit our stance on this important issue.

After months of arguments and counter arguments within BW HQ (which nearly ripped the studio in half through bitter infighting), Head honcho MR EA, stepped in and made the decision for us.

Therefore it was decided that instead of potentially being campaigned against and possibly having the offices of bioware being taken over by the 'league against cruelty to make-believe animals', it be best to drop the idea of dog collars.

We are very sorry if this has destroyed your gaming experience, but take heart (this is between me and you) we are are planning to release a new DLC adventure for Dog and his companions called 'eat my bone' where you take on hoards of skeletons to eventually secure the future of the holy relic 'bone of bones' which we call 'Boneo'! As a bonus you can then gift this to Dog for +99 affinity with your character, and it will also stop Dog from s*****g in the camp!"

So there you have it-the definitive answer to the dog collar issue.
