There have been many posts on how such and such a class is overpowered, or nerfed, and this thread is dedicated to how people view such things. Personally, I don't think the game is broken in any way, but that's my opinion, and I know others disagree with this. The following is my understanding of the principals behind what I consider to be a refreshing change of pace.
Focus with options:
It is a refreshing change of pace to have your character focus on a certain style. In the case of the warrior, one needs to decide what type of warrior one will be. This makes a great deal of sense to me, as someone who trained heavily in a two handed weapon style probably wouldn't be nearly as effective wielding a sword and shield. In previous titles, one would sink points into mastering melee weapons, regardless of style, and one could wield whatever weapon one wanted more or less as effectively as any other. In DA:O, with only one point to spend on abilities at level up, you can seriously nerf your warrior if you cross style too much. You can, however, make extremely effective use of deviating from your focused style. Here are 2 examples
A DW warrior can sink a couple of talent points into the archery tree. The dual wielder already needs a high dex score, so he can get decent damage with a bow. Over the course of the game, buying rapid shot can help nip away at the enemies hp as he rushes towards your ambush, and shattering shot can cripple the enemy even more as he gets closer to you, where you can proceed to slice him up when he closes into melee range.
A 2h warrior can buy a couple S&S abilities, giving him more cc. Shield bash and Shield pummel. Your 2h warrior can run into battle, pommel strike one, shield bash another, shield pummel a third, then 2 handed sweep as all 3 are starting to get up (obviously you need to switch weapons mid fight).
This demonstrates the diversity of the options you are presented with when making your build.
In the case of the mage, I especially like the amount of options we are presented with. You can have a purely support mage who buffs and heals your team, debuffs the enemy, and only has a couple primal spells for a quick defense if necessary, such as Winter's Grasp, Rock Armor and Stonefist. Or you can have a destructive mage that is focused entirely on Primal forces, with a few hexes and personal buffs to increase the effectiveness of this school.
You no longer choose a ranger class.
You BUILD him. A rogue can fill a number of rolls, but what I truly enjoy is that I have the option to build my ranger, rather than having picked him at the beginning and being forced to stick with it. This goes for other specs as well such as bard, shapeshifter for the mage, and Berserker for the warrior class, amongst others.
In short, what I truly love about DA:O classes is the leniency you have when leveling up. All options are available to the player throughout the entire game, so you are not locking yourself in at character creation. The specializations add an even deeper function to all of the classes, and with a little study and experimentation you can build any type of character you desire throughout the entire campaign for the ultimate roll play experience.
Bioware has taken solid and established concepts and twisted them into a simple, unique system that allows deep replayability, even when sticking to the same class repeatedly.
On a final note,
I would like to say that I'm currently using Morigan's shapeshifter tree quite effectively. I had always dismissed it, but thought "why not?" this time around. It is quite fun, and not actually as gimped as many assume. This has led me to believe that all specs and classes are worthy of attention. Keeping your mind open and trying to develop new tactics based on the situations you create for yourself. I'm not saying that all specs are necessary, but they are all useful in their own way based on the roll you choose to play..
Happy gaming, everyone:wizard:
