I have been unfairly banned from ME3 multiplayer. I have reached 2265 N7 rating (that’s just to show how I love this game) and opened nearly all guns without using a single cheat. But one beautiful day it turned out that it was all in vain. I was banned for an unknown reason. It is likely that someone didn’t’ like my play or maybe I looked like a cheater, so, I was reported, I guess. I wrote to account admin, but he never explained reasons for ban, here is the letter:

Dear Bioware employee,

I seem to be unable to play multiplayer in Mass Effect 3, and I suspect this may be the result of a ban. However, I never used any cheats and software for game exploiting. Could you please clarify if it is ban and if it is, what are the reasons for it. Moreover, I kindly ask you to review my case.

Platform: PC

Origin ID: ***********

Kind regards,

DynkanGrey

After a day or so I received a letter, which didn’t provide an answer, but puzzled me instead:

Hello, I have taken a look into your account and can confirm that you have been banned for exploiting multiplayer. We take cheating very seriously and we have decided that this ban will be permanent.

I assume there is no point in writing to the account admin, as they didn’t give me neither the reason for ban, nor the time I “exploited”. So, I was reported, and they didn’t check it. The result is that I can’t play anymore just for playing with a person who didn’t like me.

So as I understand they ban innocent players, I have friends with same stories – several month of enjoying the game and *poof* random ban. The morale is that no one is safe – if you don’t use cheats there is no guarantee you will not be banned. You are reported –  it is investigated  – you are banned.
And you are like:

Anytime you e-mail me3accountadmin they will ALWAYS review your account and any action done to it.

While I do agree that no system is 100%, (so people should contact the mailing group if they are having issues) I am confident our system is doing a great job.

For the record, I do find it a bit disturbing that the ban process is completely opaque, and as is the appeal process. Even when you ask them for a reason, it seems the only message you get is "we looked at it and we think you were cheating", with no additional information or rationale on how they came to that conclusion, and therefore no ability for the accused to defend him/herself. I'm all for banning cheaters. I've reported cheaters.  I applaud Bioware for taking the time to do it. But some transparency in the process wouldn't hurt.

It also seems unfortunately the punishment levels are "nothing", "slap on the wrist" (credit wipe) and "capitol".(perma-ban), with nothing really in between. Credit wipes potentially hurt but depends on whether you've stockpiled credits. Why isn't there a "3 day ban"? (or however many days)

Better yet - why aren't they informing the potential ban victims they are being investigated? Some people are probably getting marked due to spite and out of the blue they get their account closed. This is a poor system on some levels.

Our investigations are very thorough and my team investigates hundreds of cases daily. While most of these investigations do not lead to a ban I feel that letting everyone know that we are investigating them would lead to mass paranoia which would trickle into voice chats and forums. That's not something anyone wants.

Agreed.  However, can Bioware please clarify their position on the rocket glitch soon?

More and more people are walking into lobbies (or games in progress) with Rocket Glitchers.  I already reported two this week now.  They are becoming hard to avoid in any public game.  Just an FYI.  Thank you.

Quickly off topic here. We have made our position clear:

Using the infinite rocket glitch is against the cheating policies and procedures and can get you banned.

Playing with people who rocket glitch, as long as you aren't aware before the fact, is okay at this time.

i think i read somewhere that falling trough the map in FBW is a banable offense so careful you don't die in the wrong spot. With the join game in progress being about 50% of the time now you could easily end up in game where someone is glitching

Personally i am tired of walking on eggshells in fear of accidentally ending up in the wrong game or dying in the wrong spot. Bioware needs to be crystal clear about where they draw the line between being victim of glitches or intentionally exploiting them

We are very clear. When we investigate these reports unless we have evidence that a person specifically abused a glitch, they are not banned.

Heck, I've fallen through the world once or twice at work, I hope I don't get banned ;)

Nobody has a legal right to know why they were banned, and BioWare does not have a legal obligation to tell them. That said, informing someone of why they were banned is the right thing to do.

I doubt that Bioware bans innocent players.

That's all I'm going to say on the matter.

A BioWare employee said in this thread that "no system is perfect". In other words, they acknowledge some innocent players are going to be banned, even if it's a very small number of them, it happens.

That was me. I know this system inside and out and I want to clarify a couple things:

#1. This is NOT an automated system. A real person investigates accounts that have either been reported to us or that a seperate system has flagged for investigation.
#2. Appeals are often reviewed by multiple people, who exchange ideas and look at the big picture as well as individual slices of data.

As I mentioned, I will be the first to admit that our system isn't 100% perfect and that mistakes may be made, but I can tell you that due to the amount of seperate checks we run the margin for error is very, very small.

I believe this, Thomas.  I never got the impression that BioWare doesn't do a thorough and careful job with the investigations.  I'm just wondering if there's a specific reason why people aren't told exactly why they're being banned.  If you can't answer or don't want to answer this, I totally understand.

It's an odd position to be honest and one we didn't take lightly when discussing what we would and would not tell players. Essentially it boiled down to 99.9% of cheaters know what they did (whether they want to admit it or not) so mentioning exactly what could lead to future circumvention of some of the ways we detect cheaters.

A life without ABRAM SMASH is a life not worth living.

I have encountered rocket glitcher once and noticed the cheating happening after wave 6 or 7 I'm not sure, but I didn't leave during the match because I spent consumables. So I left after the match, am I safe or screwed?
Plus I have fell through the floor on Firebase White once like 2 months ago because someone told me to try it and see what happens.

How bad are these "accidents" that have happened to me?

Nothing to worry about :)
