I am transferring from an old PS3 to a new one that I will get free of charge for the old one which had a faulty Blu-ray drive. I did a full backup and now I am reading that I can't transfer copyright protected saves that seem to include both ME2 and ME3? WHAT? Where should I shout and whom should I kill?

I realize this isn't Bioware's fault but EA is just one step above so I'm channeling my hate there. Has anybody ever transfered ME2 or 3 saves succesfully to a new system?

I think this is what you need to do: http://manuals.plays...ferutility.html
I just quikly checked myself in the PS3 menu, and it states that even protected save files are transfered.
Hope this helps!

I know, the problem is that I will never have the two systems at my hands at the same time. They will take the old one and replace it with the new one. I guess I'm lost here, eh? I am not willing to pay three months of PS Plus just to back up my games.

Thanks a lot though.

You're welcome, sorry to hear you can't use the procedure.
PS plus is the only alternative I know of, and paying for a backup (especially a timed one) it's not that great.

Mass Effect 2 and 3 files aren't copy protected, I transfered game saves from my old ps3 to my new one. All you need is a usb storage device. It worked like a charm. (I used my psp)

Yes, you're totally right now that I think better about it! Saved games aren't copy protected, however the one that stores your profile information is.

Not copying it will ruin the eventual trophies progress, making impossibile to unlock, for example, the "reach level 60" one and the "complete all missons on insanity" one with the character/s of the copied save files.

Ofcourse this doesn't apply if the OP doesn't care about trophies, or has altready unlocked the platinum trophy.

Unless the system is under warrenty with sony there are places you can send it to replace the drive.

Oh they're not? So if I copy the saves over without the profile information I won't be able to get trophies? Where's the logic in this?

And I've already sent it to Sony, they said it cannot be repaired. The shrugged their shoulders when I asked what the deal was.

Very true, your trophy progression stats reset, but that wasn't nearly as hard to get back as say my favorite character save for starting new playthroughs on 3.  Plus most of them are easy to get (the trophy's) anyway.  Especially good for that is multiplayer.  ^_^  I got a few just playing around on mp not even trying for them.  (the one about bring down shields with tech powers for example).

Even if it were copy protected, the Ps Plus' cloud save upload and download works for locked saves. At least, it worked for me. (Not talking about ME3 saves, but other games that had been copy protected)

To OP:
did you mean you found out that you couldn't transfer the saves AFTER you had got the new PS3? Because from what I understand, you can't copy the individual ME files from the XMB interface; but if you go to Backup option in PS3 and do a FULL backup of the HDD then go to Backup option again on the new PS3 you should be able to recover the relevant files.

So let me just say that I did a full backup, expecting to see a FULL BACKUP. Not only didn't it fully backup the hard drive (the user who wasn't doing the backup was deleted) but it didn't backup anything. It backed up some videos but it didn't backup any configuration, themes but mostly the other player's settings or game saves. I know this isn't either Bioware or EA thing, Sony is starting to suck heavily. When it says FULL backup, I expect a FULL one, not partially partial.

And when I restored what was left, it didn't restore the copy protected saves as expected. And hell no, I'm not paying for PS Plus only to back up my saves. That is ridiculous.

Hi, I have a similar issue that I'm worried about. My PS3 hasn't officially quit but is getting up there in age. I pulled out the old USB drive to make sure I have a backup and copied the saves just fine. It would not copy the player data file as stated above.

My question is, if my Playstation quits, will I have to start over in Multiplayer? If so, I may have to shell out the money for the ridiculous Playstation Plus that does nearly nothing (150MB of storage? hahahha, what a joke!!)

Multiplayer data is linked to your PSN account/ ea account and saved on their network.  You will be fine as long as you use the same psn account on your new ps3.
