Whoever chose Jowan's spells should be beaten about the head and shoulders with a rotting herring.

I'm trying to do The Fade with Jowan at level 10 after getting the Circle's help, and he doesn't have Winter's Grasp ~>:( I'm struggling with the 3rd fight due to there being 2 rage demons.

Is there another choice of someone to send in that doesn't result in negative approval ratings from party members?

Refuse Jowan's "help", fetch Irving from the Circle and choose a mage to your liking. I usually do it with the PC, for some reason I always play mages, silly me. I did it with Morrigan, once, for a change. It was... interesting. If you do it with the PC, you'll get the option to blacmail the demon into giving you a spell tome, for instance.

Morrigan seriously pwns everything in the Fade, and the worst approval hit I took from her was -1. If you've spoken to her a few times beforehand and raised her approval any, you probably won't even take a hit to your approval at all.

Unless I'm playing a mage myself, she's my go-to girl!

I heard somebody here say that the First Enchanter is pretty lousy in the Fade too. That's a bit of a shock....what is his spell selection like?

Very weak.  Irwin is level 16 but only has arcane bolt, glyphs and a tier 1 staff.  I couldn't get him past the 2 rage demons on nightmare.  Morrigan does it in a breeze and with no disapproval as long as you talk to her about it first.

Jowan was an apprentice mage in the Circle Tower, he never took rite of passage (Harrowing) that why he have such a weak spells.

Hence the utility of the No Follower Auto-Level mod. With that mod, you get to assign all the attributes, skills, and talents for anyone who ever joins your party.

It's not only the spell selection but also the fact that he has no way to regain health other than drain life which doesn't return much. Your normal characters have access to health potions which make the fight against two rage demons and the desire demon is quite easy regardless what spells you have.

That's all fine and good, but what's the excuse for the First Enchanter sucking?  He *should* be the most powerful mage in the game, at least in theory!

Seems like an oversight that they gave him such poor spell selection.

Why?

The position of First Enchanter might be primarily administrative.  We don't know.

Jowan Vs Desire demon on nightmare is really the only hard fight in the game, or at least the only one that made me reload. All the boss fights should be like that imo. Well not that limited and annoying, but equal in challenge at least.

Eh, if you can get to the demon, I didn't think it was really that bad. He has all tier one spells, meaning most of the single-target damage spells. Between stone fist and whatever other CC spell he had it ended up being enough. To me the more annoying thing was killing the rage demons without winter's grasp.

As I mentioned, I did get the Circle's help but I decided to pick Jowan because it made the most RP sense and seemed least likely to affect my party member reps. Maybe I'll back up a save and go do some side-quests so that Jowan will have Winter's Grasp and a few more HP. I think that would make all the difference.
