In the sense that the synthesis ending presumes that machines needed to evolve in order to understand organic emotion and empathy. I actually got the impression that they were assuming that machines could learn these things like any organic without requiring any system changes.

Pretty early on in ME1 we learn that machines aren't all just pure logic and emotionless drones. The heretics worshipped Soveriegn fervently and irrationally as a god. Whilst the machine on the citadel clearly acted out of fear and contempt; not simple self-preservation. Later on, in ME2 Legion adds even more credence to this. He keeps a piece of Sheps armour as a trophy and is clearly angered during his argument with Tali. Because of this, Mirandas assertion that machine are incapable of these things, which fits with the synthesis ending, is untrue and simply prejudice. Then you have EDI, who clearly goes on a self-learning experience, makes her own identity, defines herself in relation to others and then forms relationships with them. In other words, I assumed that what Bioware were aiming for was that, for dramatic licence, machines were essentially as emotional and socially capable as humans; they just needed to learn empathy/emotion (remember EDI is only three years old). They certainly aren't pure automatons acting out of pure logic or completely emotionless.

I think Bioware wanted to try to be ambivalent. But they don't seem to have realised that in order for a synthesis ending to make sense that there has to be an utterly irresolvable barrier to synthetics understanding human beings. Not difficult, not requiring a few pep talks which is how its portrayed, but utterly impossible and for machines to be totally other-worldly. As it is, they just come across as people and syntheis feels unneccesary. Machines can learn to behave like organics, hence they have the capacity to become organics in spirit, why should they need to evolve?

Ironically, Control Shephard AI, despite having all the knowledge and the like is actually portrayed as other-worldly and no longer on a level of organics. Which is actually not in keeping with how synthetics or reapers have been portrayed throughout the series; but which does match the synthesis ending.
