Normandy Crash
The room felt so empty and cold. The lighting was dimmer than Samantha was accustom to with only the light from the morning sun shining into the Cabin through the skylight above. The Commander’s quarters were in strike contrast to the lush jungle world just outside the Normandy, but were fitting to Samantha’s mood.
She slowly moved through the room that was once so filled with life and love. Its emptiness now echoed the hard truth that the rest of the Normandy crew was trying to convince Samantha of; that her Commander who she had seen unity the galaxy, bring peace the Quarians and Geth, cure the genophage… and who won her heart was dead. Her mind wouldn’t accept it and her heart couldn’t bear to believe it.
Making it to the bed in the back of the cabin Samantha sat down on its corner and drop the metallic plaque she had been holding tightly to her chest. The thud from it hitting the ground was louder than Samantha had expected.
“What am I doing…” Samantha uttered out loud as the past few moments at the Memorial Wall on the crew deck of the Normandy ran through her mind. She had made it all the way to the wall and was about to place the plaque, with Commander Shepard’s name on it, above Admiral Anderson’s but she couldn’t. She had tried convincing herself it was time to let go of Kate but her heart wasn’t ready. The rest of the crew was struggling with the loss of their Commander but they had accepted its reality, she couldn’t. She had turned quickly from the wall, hugging the plaque to her chest. The look in the crew’s eyes when she turned said it all to Samantha, they had given up hope of seeing their commander again. She had quickly passed through them and went straight into the elevator.
And now she found herself here, in the Commander’s quarters, feeling more lost and unsure of her future than when she had first meet Kate not even 3 months ago.
The cabin doors opened disturbing the silent peace that had fallen over the room. “Samantha, are you in here?”
Samantha looked up, from the plaque on the ground before her, as Steve Cortez entered the cabin. “I’m over here.” Samantha said only slightly muffled from the tears starting to roll down her dark skinned cheek.
Steve slowly made his way over to her. His eyes revealing his deep sympathy for the struggle she was fighting.
“She was amazing woman…” Steve started saying, “wasn’t she?” Samantha said nothing and Steve continued. “I don’t think I ever told you this, but it was because of Shepard I’m still here. She was there for me when my world fell apart with the loss of Robert. If it wasn’t for her…” His voice trailed off. “I just wanted to say I’m here for you Samantha, we all will miss her, and I know what she meant to you.” He was right about that Steve was one of the few people Samantha had confided in about Kate’s and hers relationship and she was thankful for him being here now.
“You’re wrong about one thing Steve…” Samantha said getting up off the bed and walking over to closest wall. “She is an amazing woman.”
“Samantha, you read the initial reports…” but Samantha cut him off before he could finish.
“Don’t.” Samantha said looking back at Steve. “Just don’t… I know what it says. But initial reports can be wrong, we aren’t even sure what happened and until we restore communications we won’t.”
“Adams thinks that could be at anytime now, along with full power… I just don’t want you to get your hopes up Samantha.” Steve said moving over to her and giving her a light but firm hug.
“I know it in my heart she’s still alive.” Samantha said choking back a flood of tears she didn’t want anyone see her cry. “I just know it…” her voice went weak as she started to cry into Cortez’s shoulder.
They stood there for a few moments until Joker’s erratic voice came over the cabin’s com. “You’re not going to believe this!” Joker said nearly yelling over the coms to the entire ship. “Shepard’s alive! She somehow made it through the Crucible’s activation. Admiral Hackett’s message states that she is in recovery onboard his ship!”
Life rushed back into Samantha. In a moment her heart went from despair to bursting with hope. She could hardly contain the emotions building up within her. She hugged Cortez and then bolted for the elevator, her feet barely touching the ground. She had to read the message herself.
Near Earth Orbit
It had taken them a better part of a week to get the Normandy space worthy again but they had finally done it. The trip from the safe heaven that Joker had landed on back to earth hadn’t taken as long as Samantha had feared but she could barely contain her excitement about being reunited with Shepard and the wait was excruciating. Once communications had been fully resorted she had contacted Admiral Hackett to get a full report on the Commander. She had learned that Kate was still unconscious but was expected to make a full recovery. Hackett kindly noted that he was glad Shepard had found someone who cared so much for her. Not knowing when Shepard might wake up she sent a video recording to Hackett for her, telling her how much she loved her, was proud of her, and that she would see her soon.
When the Normandy finally made it to Earth she was greeted with a royal welcome from the combined fleets and escorted to Hackett’s flag ship. Hackett himself had greeted Samantha at the air lock and escorted her to the Medical bay. Along the way he told her that Shepard had regained consciousness earlier that morning.
When the doors to the medical bay opened Samantha’s heart skipped a beat at the sight of her nearly lost love. Shepard was sitting upright in her bed at the far side of the room. Samantha could see that Shepard’s eyes were filled with tears and that she was holding a PDA in her hands that was playing Samantha’s recording.
“Samantha” Shepard warmly spoke as she looked up to see her walking into the room. Samantha rushed across the room and into Shepard’s awaiting arms. They embraced and kissed.
“I am never going to leave your side again, ma’am” Samantha said, holding tightly to the Commander.
“Nor would I ever let you.” Shepard said softly into Samantha’s ear.
Hackett gently smiled to himself as he stepped away from the Med-Bay door as it slowly closed behind him.
