It was stupid to make them use the Crucible after Shepard's choice. It's like Sparta surrendering to the Persians after the 300 made their last stand.

I don't know about you but in my mass effect the reapers were destroyed

First of all, 300 sucked.

Second of all, I don't remember seeing the next cycle 'made' to use the Crucible. In fact, Liara's recording explicitly said it didn't work.

Why do you think he's referencing the movie? He could easily be referencing the battle itself.

The next cycle has no idea HOW we failed. She made those boxes way before the ending with instructions to build it. I imagine the next cycle had a chance to not only build it, but had the time to fully understand what it does.

The Persian Army had a number.

The Reapers don't.

If he was referencing the battle, he would have said the Battle of Thermopylae.

In history they did. The Persians broke the 300 line like they did in the movie and rolled right on into Greece and proceeded to **** their **** up in a bad way. It took a long time for Greece to mobilize forces to fight them and an little known General called Alexander the Great to actually achieve victory, with vastly inferior forces I might add.

However, there is no reason to believe that the next cycle didn't defeat the reapers conventionally since it isn't specificially stated how they are not a threat any more. I just hate history based on movies.

I was under the impression that the next cycle does defeat them conventionally as Liara spwcifcally states that the crucible didn't work even though they explicitly completed it.

Solution for next cycle: blow up the freakin' Citadel and kill the Catalyst. Errr... wait, Shepard never got the chance to inform his allies that the Catalyst was controlling the Reapers.

Still, destroying the Citadel would have the consequence of not allowing the Reapers to make use of its relay and would have the coincidental side effect of freeing the Reapers.

Bioware confirmed the next cycle uses the crucible, hence why alot of people find refuse to be a big slap in the face.

The next cycle would have to use the crucible. She specifically states they didn't fight a war ("they fought a great war so we wouldn't have to"). The only way to do that is to use the crucible preemptively.

I think in the next cycle, they were simply warned early enough to finish the crucible before the Reapers even came. And use it THEIR way.

Well, they don't know why the Crucible failed, and so far as they know, maybe it's because there was a problem on Shepard's end of things and he died before he could make the Crucible fire. They have no way of knowing. They don't even know that the Catalyst is what is controlling the reapers, nor that they were driven to extinction because of Shepard's pride.

Maybe the next cycle - provided indoctrinated individuals don't interfere - just gets on the fast track to getting as far as Shepard is far shorter time.

Catalyst: Well... you are here, the second organic ever to do so... and it's only been 28,000 years... Crap. I wasn't really ready for you yet... So.... Have you ever wanted to be part synthetic? *franically presses hidden "Reaper Wake Up" button*

I'm studying classical Studies in university, so it's the movie obviously. And it was confirmed on Twitter.

It doesn't have to be interpreted that way, and I wouldn't have if Bioware (Gamble) had just kept their mouth (or twitter) shut.

Dropping into the middle of Dark Space where the Reapers are still sleeping and vulnerable, and them blowing them away with overwhelming numbers and technological force (both very plausible for the NEXT cycle assuming they take Liara's warning seriously) is not a war.  It's an execution.

People are always so hesitantly to use headcanon. Who cares about what some devs say on Twitter, anyway? The devs can't even get their own "artistic vision" straight.

If I were to say Normandy beaches you wouldn't assume I was referencing Saving Private Ryan.

I wish I could, but now I think of the ending as an FU rather than a gift.
