Interestingly, doing a quick, informal, non-scientific check of all those who have posted in this thread thus far-- it appear those with custom avatars are much more likely to have been temporarily banned at least once than users with standard pics.

Hmmm...perhaps the influences are not so subtle-- or perhaps custom avatars are symptomatic of something else.

Using a custom avatar might be indicative of at least some disrespect for authority. Uploading one is hax after all. We're circumventing the limitations BioWare set in pursuit of individuality. Going a step further won't be too big a leap for some folks. ;)

I seem to confuse people whenever my avatar isn't a red panda.

Isn't Off Topic where the very skinny people get their monotone clothing and cry a lot? One of the malls in town has an Off Topic.

Just FYI, Red Pandas always make me smile. They are so adorable.

It's not about what your avatar looks like but rather the distinctive tone that every poster uses to communicate... oh who am I kidding, it's all about the avatars. People probably think I have an unhealthy obsession with FemTurians because of mine, why can't they judge me on something less superficial?

True. I hide my love for musicals, Disney classics and MLP behind a Krogan face. People think I'm tough, I hope.

I think you are right. But I think the reason is people with custom ones tend to have been here longer or spent much more time here (not always the case but in general), so the chances are higher at some point they got on the wrong side of the moderators or developers due to time spent.

I'll admit I've become type-cast to this avatar: I used to switch up, but the last few times I did people were like 'who are you?' or 'I liked the old one better.'

But still, if I could get that custom avatar to work, I would so become General Tarquin...

Nah

I think more like they want to be special, do not want to have the same one as everyone else. Wish to stand out from the crowd or to be unique. I do not think there is much more to it than that.

Hey now, I'm already special. :D Custom avatars are all about making myself feel good. It's why I never listen when someone tells me they preferred an old one. I go with what I like at the time. ;)

I just like Samara's sexy, vacant stare. And her blue skin is easy to spot.

Because of this board, I associate Jack (seen from over the shoulder) as a fierce, gym-going, painstakingly rational debater.

Every Asari is suddenly pretend-females or mostly "male IRL"

Kaidan Alenko has now become "a Kaidan Fangirl"

Ponies are the new internet hipsters. I mean hoofsters.

Hackett tends to be pretty mean and easily annoyed.

If I see a collector's edition Mordin avatar, I usually read those posts. Everyone else I just scan, yo.

Check the forum TOS:

Secret Subsection 7, paragraph 8.22.b:  Pacifien must always have a fire bear as an avatar.

You don't want to violate the TOS, do you?

Do you?

My avatar looks a heck of lot like I do IRL, actually.

I tried to change it once, and faced an uproar from my friends list, so I changed it back. FirstFemHawke, all the way, I guess.

I've had this avatar for prob 90% of the time I've been here.

As for associating avatars with people? I always read KoP's posts in the voice of Xanatos. I do that a lot with cutom avatars of characters/people that I've watched shows/played games of.

Also, I don't know why, but I tend to disagree with people with Miranda avatar.

Come on dude...

Disney classics are the best!

And Pixar... damn... I still watch finding nemo, and bugs life, and cars, and toy story, and sometimes the lion king.

Nothing to be ashamed of there! ^_^
