better then Kotor 2

You hope they finished DA O before shipping? I think they can manage that. As good as Obsidian might be Kotor2 suffered from not being completed and having companion story arc’s butchered for a quick launch. Kotor was a far better game because of this.

i don't believe it can top bg2, but if da could reach this quality it would be great.

I loved the style of dreams in bg2. the way irenicus tries to manipulate you.

or the skinner that escapes from you trough the tunnels under his house and meets you as undead later.

I would pick BG2 as best. But I am totally biased as I do not enjoy JRPGs. I play RPG games to be able to actually RP. Comparing the two, is like apples and oranges as one posted already mentioned. They are different styles that are not really related.

So I would say DAO would easily win :-) Whether it is better than BG2 I don't know yet.

I've never liked JRPGs and FF7 is no exception. Just not my thing.

I think it might very well be the best RPG ever for me, with the exception of Planescape: Torment. I doubt it will knock Torment off it's throne, but it's at least a possibility, which isn't something I've said of any other game since. So it'll most likely come in as the SECOND best RPG ever, on my list. We'll see!

I know this is going to show my age, but the first computer game I ever played was Pool of Radiance back when they still used 5 1/4 inch floppies. That got me hooked on rpg's. I recently came across a video for Dragon Age, and since the last game I played was Baldur's Gate 2, I have to say that DA has gotten me interested in video gaming again. I guess I have to say I'm hoping DA will be at least as good as BG2 which is currently top of my list of best rpg's (which is admittedly outdated since I haven't played any games in quite a while).

At the very least, DA has dragged these old bones back in from the gaming wilderness. :)

I think it is, at this point, extremely likely that Dragon Age will end up being my favourite RPG of all time and, stemming from that, also among the greatest gaming experiences of my whole life. I can honestly say, I have never been as excited about any game ever! :)

FF7 wouldn't even be in my top 10. However, is it better than BG? Probably not... doesn't mean it won't be orgasmic.

This. Comparing FF7 to western rpgs makes no sense at all. If you ask me, not a single FF can be considered rpg, let alone "best" rpg of all time. It's just too much over the top for real immersion imo

They are two different types of RPG, Final Fantasy are about experiencing someone else's story while Bioware games are about forging your own story according to the choices given.

And FF7 is outdated now, so DA it is!

I do totally agree. Planescape: Torment is the only videogame that actually made me cry as I got closer to the end. Plus, Fall-from-Grace was, is and will forever be my heroine. <3

I don't know, to be honest, as your standards of what makes an RPG good seem to be massively different to mine - I think all JRPGs are demons sent from hell to cause infinite dullness. And I've not played Final Fantasy 7, so I can't make a comment on that game in particular.

I'm going to disagree. That means Oblivion and Buldar's Gate are the same type of RPG while Diablo and Vampire: Bloodlines are also the same type of RPG.

In my opinion is impossible to compare JRPG with Western RPG. Totally different mindsets. Final Fantasy has it's fun, but I'm much more into Western RPG.

The best CRPG is Planescape: Torment. If DA:O is half as good as PS:T it will still be an excellent game.

Final Fantasy 7 is overrated. Final Fantasy 4 and 6 are far superior.

True, but all the WRPG 's you listed, you build YOUR OWN character, and most of them let you make choices about the paths your characters take.

JRPGs let you but the goddamned noise everywhere, with only alittle more freedom than a rail shooter, heh.

I have a great many favorite RPGs....I'm an equal opportunity role-player. ;) Heartily agree that Planescape: Torment is one of the all-time greats (love love love Annah and her spunk). Then again, I loved almost every Infinity Engine game that was made....although I never had a chance to play BG1. Enjoyed the first NWN, but not as much as some. Morrowind still tops my list for the "open world" style RPG's--the first RPG I ever played on a console, and I still judge all the others against it for depth and freedom of play.

I can enjoy JRPGs when I'm in the right mood. Never played FF7 (have never owned a Sony console), but I did enjoy the heck out of FF12 a while back. Not because it was the greatest game ever, but because it was pretty and moving through the game gave me a feeling of achievement at each new milestone. Once things start to get grindy....I lose interest pretty quick. Which is why, even though I own Lost Odyssey, it sits unfinished and collecting dust on my DVD shelf. Well, that and the fact that they kept forcing you to split up your party in weird ways. :P

More recently, Oblivion was nice, but didn't absorb me utterly the way Morrowind still can. Mass Effect is, bar none, the most cinematic game of ANY kind that I've ever played. While it may not offer the same kind of freedom that an Elder Scrolls game does, it truly makes me FEEL while I'm playing it. I dare anyone with emotions to NOT be affected by the opening cinematic/reveal, or the ending. I swear, my heart POUNDS as I fight my way up the outside of the Citadel Spire to take on Saren, and the ending cinematic brings a tear to my eye every time. It's like living inside a REALLY GOOD action/adventure movie (*cough* newStarTrek! *cough*).

All that being said.....I have extremely high hopes for DA:O. At absolute worst, it seems likely to be a fun and engaging experience along the lines of NWN1. At best, it could be as awesome and emotional an experience as Planescape: Torment, coupled with the incredible immersion and cinematic elements of Mass Effect. I'm hoping for the latter.....we'll find out in two and a half weeks! :D

[/quote]Yes. Then after the Baldur's Gate series we can get into every other amazing isometric RPG.

Best RPG so far isn't FF7... not even that close... Both Baldur's Gate II and Ultima 7 are far beyond what FF7 had to offer, even in its own franchise FF6 is a lot better in terms of storyline and character development.

Granted BGII and Ultima never created an original universe that FF7 achieved, and if the OP is trying to measure DA:O in that aspect than I would think FF7 will be the top of that niche, Fallout 1&2 comes close though.

I am pretty sure DA:O will be a lot better RPG than FF7 consider you are actually role playing and not just following through "adventure of Cloud."

BGII almost flunk me out of my major and out of graduation, I remember spending all day planning out my character sheet instead of learning about circular dichroism spectroscopy... I still had a 4.0 when FF7 came out... Even with the great hopes I have for DA:O judging from the character creator I doubt it will surpass Baldur's Gate II.

I liked FF 7 when it was released, but it hasn't aged particularly well. I find the combat to be alternately very easy or, for the optional bosses, nigh-on impossible without employing a handful of specific strategies. The story is, well, interesting in concept, very meh in execution. Even at the time I thought Fallout was the more entertaining RPG.

Perhaps the OP is really asking whether we think DA:O will outsell or outmatch FF 7's reputation - I hope that it does, but am not really sure that it will. As others have said, it's a different type of game. Both BG and FF7 were transformative games, in the sense of attracting tons of new North American and European consumers and establishing that robust markets existed for their respective types of RPG. I think DA:O has the same potential, certainly, but I wonder whether enough folks have the patience for sprawling narratives and pause-n-play combat. I don't mean to paint an insulting picture of ADHD afflicted konsole kiddies - many of my friends are late twenty-something gamers who simply cannot dedicate more than half an hour to a game at a time and so prefer quick, self-contained sessions with games they find engaging only for the gameplay - they do not want to become invested in a story, even though they loved Baldur's Gate and BG2, they're afraid DA:O will suck up too much of their time nowadays.

I liked FFX more than FF7, the story in 7 just didn't click with me for some reason. I think Dragon Age will definitely be more enjoyable.
