Will Dragon Age Origins be the best rpg ever, even better than final fantasy 7?

The question is rather, IS FF7 such a good RPG.champofflame wrote...
It definitely has the potential. What more could you want from an rpg- great customized classes like shape shifters and stealthy rogues, a huge world to explore with tons of dialogue options and a plethora of unique monsters to fight.
Even if you play 60 hours in one playthrough, there is incentive to play it like 10 more times at least. You can't go wrong with this.
It is good, I won't argue about it, but it is way overrated, imho.
Did you ever play Planescape Torment or Baldur's Gate I + II?
Just as an example.
Dragon Age will at least be pretty solid.
The whole story will be revealed if it has been played by thousands of gamers.
Then, it may be labeled as best ever, very good, or just OK.

Go back and play FF7... then come back and tell me its the best rpg ever... man that game has problems. It was good, sure, but it has so much acclaim due to the time it came out. Theres so many better games, and so many better FFs!

If i had to rank them, i think ff7 would fall around 3rd best ff... behind 6 and 10 (id say those two are tied, atleast i cannot pick which is better).
IMO- FF 7 got a lot of praise because it was the first rpg to take advantage of the expanded capabilities of the playstation.
there werent many jrpgs out at the time on consoles and it had an "anime" design aspect to it.
im not sure i would even put that in my top 10 jrpgs (and i loved ff7 when it came out) of all time.
i agree with you 6 is better, but as far as 10 goes IMO- after 7 the series was all downhill.
i'm going to give 13 a chance, but with real rpgs bieng released like this and mass effect and fallout 3 type of games where you actually are "role-playing" and not just "playing the story", ive been moving away from jrpgs over the last few years.
too many cliched things i'm sick of. when there were no other options, fine, but now there are so i'm no longer a starving man in the desert who will eat anything.

However, Dragon Age offers us RPG players a unique opportunity. Instead of being told we grew up in Candlekeep with Imoen or we were part of an elite group called SOLDIER or we single-handedly fought off an invasion of Elysium from batarian slavers and their allies, we get to actually get to play our backgrounds and have those choices define who our character are.
In that regard, I think Dragon Age will be set apart from other RPGs.

They are two different types of RPG, Final Fantasy are about experiencing someone else's story while Bioware games are about forging your own story according to the choices given.
And FF7 is outdated now, so DA it is!
I'm going to disagree. That means Oblivion and Buldar's Gate are the same type of RPG while Diablo and Vampire: Bloodlines are also the same type of RPG.
True, but all the WRPG 's you listed, you build YOUR OWN character, and most of them let you make choices about the paths your characters take.
JRPGs let you but the goddamned noise everywhere, with only alittle more freedom than a rail shooter, heh.
Yeah that's what I meant, in FFs you don't get to craft your character AT all, they are not yours they are fictional characters pre made with their own pre determined fate. It's like an interactive movie where you get to play mini games and fight monsters but you don't decide anything. And if you play it multiple times it's always the same identical experience in terms of story.
Not so with Oblivion, Fallout, Mass Effect and Dragon Age. These maybe done differently but they are similar in that you can craft your own person and even choose a path.

Now DA is supposed to be Baulder's Gate for 2009 and that to me is very exciting and despite the EA videos that keep getting released, fills me with anticipation.
By all accounts it looks like they did a spectacular job and I cant wait to get into the grime and grit of the story and how the world plays out under my actions and dive deep into character builds and party/combat tactics. So in that regard, yes in my mind DA will be the best computer RPG out to date.
