Will Dragon Age Origins be the best rpg ever, even better than final fantasy 7?

Well, flipper pinball and pachinko are based on the same ancestors as well and I suppose one could draw parallels between their differences and the differences between, I dunno, Dragon Quest and Baldur's Gate or Lineage and TOR to use rather extreme examples. It all comes down to society's standard mentality, I guess.Mordaedil wrote...
It's kinda weird, they have the same roots in trying to emulate D&D, but as time went on, JRPG decided to adopt better rules-systems more intended for platform and consoles, while WRPG's found that the formulae that they were made of didn't quite work, so they decided "we need to stand out" and then came Baldur's Gate and breathed life into the RPG genre here in the west.caspertjuhh wrote...
it think dragon age is better, because its WRPG and WRPG rule JRPG

So, yes, I imagine it will be. Just like every RPG I've played for the past decade has been.

In my opinion, Baldur's Gate 2 and Throne of Bhaal was the best RPG ever, after that, nothing has given me as much enjoyment as a fully modded Oblivion (vanilla just doesn't cut it). FF7 was good, and had some of the most memorable moments in an RPG, but it was hardly the best. I have to say that the tone and feel of the Witcher is really impressing me. I haven't played all the way through KotOR yet so I don't know where that factors in. Mass Effect was cool but it was a little overrated; the game world felt overly sterile and the story, while good, wasn't as "epic" as people say it was.
Agreed, and I think this is going to be another type of experience in the so-known RPG genre, the social network, the character development, the environment, the gameplay, and the rules that the RPG system has is quite unique but I still have to wait to play it before saying that it's better than BG II or another good RPG (I would never compare a Western RPG with a JRPG, specially because I would never say that a JRPG could be the best RPG ever made), but as I said it's a completely new type of experience and it will surely cause some impact in the RPG players community, specially when a tabletop game is being made indicating that they want DA:O to be more than just a video game.

A lot of things come into play when talking about RPGs. I liked JRPGs a lot when I was younger. Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and the FF series had a special place in my heart. But as I grew older, I started shying away from them for their poor stories, bad art, big hair and bigger swords. Everything just always seemed the same to me. And it still does. Look at FFXIII -- same old story, same characters with a new coat of paint. It's almost insulting as a gamer.
My favorite of all-time is definitely BG2/ToB. Nothing really compares.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: if DA:O can capture half the magic of BG2, then it's going to be amazing.
A week's time will tell.

It definitely has the potential. What more could you want from an rpg- great customized classes like shape shifters and stealthy rogues, a huge world to explore with tons of dialogue options and a plethora of unique monsters to fight.
Even if you play 60 hours in one playthrough, there is incentive to play it like 10 more times at least. You can't go wrong with this.
Uhm...it's not even in the top 10 of the past 5 years. When it actually ships with a real difficulty level and a second playthrough that takes more than 20 hours it might be worth it. As it stands now the BG series, Morrowind and a plethora of other games released 10-15 years ago have this game beat easily.

Though FF6 was undoubtetly better in many ways.
And Final Fantasy Legend 2 is the FF I played the most.
If I was to give a "Best RPG ever" award, I'd still give it to Planescape Torment though.
Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura would be ranking quite high.
I guess the Fallout series would get a mention somewhere...
The Vampire games had potential. I prefered the story in Redemption, but Bloodlines was a lot more ambitious.
How Dragon Age will rank I can't tell yet. FF7 I replayed a couple of years ago. If I end up saying in six or more years time "Oooh lets reinstall Dragon Age, haven't played that in ages!" then I'll be able to answer the question

How has Final Fantasy become "the standard" for rpgs?
I played seven and thought it was okay. I played eight and actually enjoyed the story more. From nine on I thought they were utter garbage (well at least to ten...which I only played four hours of).
Don't get me wrong, I know people must like them for a reason that I'm simply not grasping but, for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to slog through 80-100 hours of repetetive gameplay, effeminate protaganists and mindnumbingly convoluted storylines.
For me, DA isn't the best rpg ever (I'm still a BG guy) but it is light years ahead of any jrpg out there.
Can somebody please explain the draw of jrpgs to me?

DA isn't the best RPG ever, I can't say how things will be for DA:2 as BioWare have seemingly gone with the Mass Effect "Adventure route" but I'll have to reserve judgement till I actually play.

And please don't mention DA in the same breath as Chrono Trigger or Ocarina of Time. Sorry Chrono Trigger tops or top 3 in countless lists in the best rpgs of all time or best game of all time. And Zelda: Ocarina of Time is widely considered the best game of all time by many critics. It has the highest metacritic score in history with almost all perfect 10s across the board (Dragon Age has score of 86 critic and 7.5 user rating with Zelda scoring 99 average critic and 9.6 user. Hell Final Fantasy scored considerably higher with 92 critic and 9.3 user) Dragon Age is a good game but I've NEVER seen it in the top 10 rpgs or games of all time in any publication.

The only Final Fantasy games I enjoyed was 4 (the first to be released in N. America) and 7 which came out seven years later. I had a chance to play a demo of IX (does anyone else remember when they would send you demo discs in the mail for free that had about fifteen games to try out?) and knew I wasn't going to like it, so I completely skipped that one. I actually bought X without trying the demo (no more free demo discs in the mail. I wonder why?) because it had a perfect review from my gaming mag. I could only play it for about four hours and I was completely bored. It was like you were just progressing to watch a movie. Very dull. I gave it away. Or was that XI? I don't know and don't care.
And since then I have been Final Fantasy free for eight years. Thank you, thank you.
