I have a beard myself. Have for several years now. For me there is no obsession. I just hate shaving. I get razor burn, no matter what I try.
I know the feeling. I can not do a beard because at some point it starts to get painfull. Even keeping it trimmed around my chin is so thick it will tangle and begin actualy curling up and growing back into a pore. Giving a whole new meaning to ingrown...
I shave maybe every 5-7 days. Wash my face with soap and water (even if I just got out the shower) rince then soap my face up. Shave once with the grain to get the majority of it clear. Rince, soap up again, then add shave cream. Thats when I go against the grain gently. The sides of my neck I go down and sideways or else I end up stray war survivors.
Even then I have a 5 o'clock shadow at 8 a.m. Thankfully my jobs do not require me to be clean shaven or beareded all the time.
As for the topic. Some of us are not obsessed we just have to deal with it. I joke about all the hair on my head moved to my face and I wish it would go back.

I know I'm severely late to this topic (I'm bored as hell so why not?) but my reasoning for growing a beard (when I do) is a mix between general laziness and the fact that it irritates my skin more often than not, even if using aftershave.
I'm required to be clean shaven for 2 days a week (Tues & Thurs) for Marines poolee meetings and that's it so I shave Tuesday morning and by Friday it's back to being close to a full blown 5 o'clock shadow and then some by Tuesday again. On weeks without the meets, I just say screw it. I'm not out to impress anybody. lol
Though I must admit I was sad that my team didn't make the playoffs this year, I had a pretty damn good beard going last year when the Lightning went to the Eastern Conference Finals. But alas..
That makes sense. Do you think you'd grow and epic thicknasty beard if you didn't have to shave for meetings?
Probably. like I said, during last year's playoffs it was pretty epic if I say so myself. Little less than 2 months spanning from Game 1 of round 1 to game 7 of round 3, so yeah.
But living in Florida it gets hot so I'd eventually wimp out and shave anyway... =/
