I can't install ME1 on my pc since I upgraded to Win7 (sp1). The issue isn't with Mass Effect per se, the installer gets stuck when it tries to install the C++ Redistributable 2005.

The WIndows Installer works, it's not disabled. I've registered and unregistered it, messed with the registry, tried a system restore, tried a clean boot, performed an ancient tribal dance in front of the screen - no luck.

If you know the solution, help would be appreciated.

Ok, bonus question since no one here seems to know and I really don't wanna create an XP partition.
Can ME1 actually work on a Win7 64 bit machine?

ME1 runs fine on a Win 7 64 bit PC.

Thank you, I'm checking them right now. Do you have sp1 installed?

I'm running Win 7 Pro SP1 x64. So yeah, Service Pack 1 is installed. :)

Have you tried using the 64 bit installer for C++ 2005? I assume you have administrative rights.

Yep. Same error. Reinstalling the service pack didn't work either.

I tried the following:
-re-registered the installer
-reinstalled the installer
-reg editing: set WOW64 to 0, changed image path for the msiservice, replaced the whole key with the key from a working computer
-attempted clean boot and safe mode execution
-other stuff that I don't remember but got me sitting in a hot room, eating ice cream and trying to fix this issue for two days

No luck. I can install visual C++ 2008 & 2010. Unfortunately, ME1 wants the 2005 version. :(

In case anyone comes across the same problem, I got it fixed.

I downloaded the following Visual C++ 2005 Security Update: http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=26347.

It gave me an installation error, but still got listed up among the installed applications. After that I could install ME1, though it crashed every time I tried to launch it or run the configuration.
So I installed patch 1.02: http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html

It took forever to load but it's finally working :D
