Can we work a little harder on making the PC likable. The problem I had with Hawke is s/he sounded like a jerk half the time and all his/her lines sounded like they were writen for a silent protaganist rather than a voiced one. Conversation never felt right. It was like Bioware still wanted us to have the option to make Hawke our own pike the Warden was on Origins. The problem is a Voice just takes that option away. If you are giving the main characterof 3 a voice as it is clear you will give them a ser personality and go with it. Just like Sheperd in Mass Effect is always the same no matter how you play him/her. That is what needs to be done if the MC is voiced. A voiced MC is not what I want but if I have to play as one I would perfer it was done right and much better then Hawke was handled.
So since VO for the main character are the new rule of thumb around here...

DA2 and ME is a sort of middle ground between fully player created characters and Witcher/2 Deus Ex/HR.
I'd say ME worked better upto ME3 where autodialogue sent the character off into a bit of a spin.

Or better yet, go back to the Origins original formula of have a non-fixed protagonist. No need to worry about the exceptance of the VO or cinematics for the protagonist. Problem solved. Next problem?

Which they have said on numerous occasions they won't do.

^ There is always hope that they will go back to Origins' style of gameplaying. Until I actually see another set protagonist and the statement "VO" attached to it, I'll continue suggest the DA team to go back to silent protagonist.

...and I'll keep hoping they release games I can run on one of the 486 machines I use for endtables, but we can dream, can't we?Jerrybnsn wrote...

I think I agree with the OP. If you have a voiced PC, make them a fixed PC. The problem with Hawke being a "semi-fixed" is that certain motivations and emotions were forced on the player, while others were supposed to come from the player. That made it confusing as hell to play Hawke, especially from a first-person prespective.

I must be in a minority, as I really like FemHawke's voice, and enjoyed most of her comments/commentary, especially the sarcastic responses. Didn't like the male Hawke's voice nearly as much - he sounded far too suave and glib for my tastes - but each to their own.
The one thing that frustrated me was that there seemed very few opportunities for her to express genuine anger, outrage or horror when I felt the situation demanded it (there are quite a few such moments within the game).
Many of the angry/violent responses sounded a little lacklustre to my ears.. when what I really wanted was for her to scream abuse at the protagonist in question, or threaten them with violence in a 'I'll rip you to shreds' kind of manner... rather than the generic 'you will die' stuff that seemed to be the default. When you consider the horror and shock that Hawke is forced to endure in some encounters, I do feel that such a response would have fitted the situation.

For all intents and purposes - I felt like Hawke was just about a fixed PC in most of the ways that count. You can select gender, class, and customize appearance, but other than that, you basically have Shepard with diplomatic/snarky/aggressive behaviors instead of paragon/renegade. No options to define morality, character, personality...
Not nearly enough room for role-playing to satisfy me - which is why I've never played ME.
