Interesting topic for this week's musing.

Personally, I play the role. I've never quite brought into this idea that the character is an avatar for ourselves. I suppose I play games to escape, so the last thing I want to do really is to project myself into them. I'd rather define my own character, and then play the role. Of course that doesn't mean that none of my tastes or preferences make it into the character, invariably they do, either consciously or sub-consciously.

In terms of the romance side, I think that's a good example of where I play the role, but my tastes shape that role, certainly that aspect of it. I don't think I could really play out a romance with someone that I wouldn't get on with.

Well hopefully this will be more to everyone's liking;

You, sir/ma'am not only get put in Sam's FF, you get a special post on the blog, featuring the video, as well.  Since you sort of made it in response to my whine/complaint/observation, lol.

Thank you!!

First of all, I have to say how much I like this thread! I was considering starting one of my own regarding the romances in the Mass Effect series, but I feel that's completely unnecessary now. This thread covers everything I would've brought up and in far more detailed and comprehensive fashion.

I think a romance DLC would be great. I think that romances - especially Mass Effect 2 romances - were not given proper attention in the third game. While I realize that the Mass Effect series is not a dating sim or anything of the sort, but when you spend this much time with the characters, you do hope to get a proper resolution. While I'm not complaining really about the development some of these characters received, some were not given proper attention in the third game.

I do think the option should be to have some more of the LI characters be full squadmates in the game and fight by your side in Mass Effect 3 - especially in that final battle. As if Miranda would be anywhere else - why should I have to have my final conversation with her via video conference basically? Some more side missions, a reward for being "faithful" to a character, more romance and character specific dialogue for your love interests - all great suggestions! In fact, every suggestion I've seen here would be pretty freaking fantastic overall and would only enhance the characters and storyline overall.

I mean - it all boils down to I want more Mass Effect. Make it happen, Bioware/EA. I am not partial to how they do it - several patches or one patch - but any additions to resolve some of these romances in a more satisfying fashion would be appreciated. If I were them, I'd release it in Romance DLC - on Valentine's Day. I'd definitely pay for that!

We're glad so many people are so supportive of this blog. It really is a labor of love (pun kind of intended I guess). We'll keep plugging away on this blog until we're told by BioWare 'No more DLC for ME3,' and then maybe it can be used as a roadmap for how much we adore the love interests in this particular games and what can be done with them in the future. But I don't know. Perhaps it's just been ignored, but truth be told, I don't think so.

While, no, there hasn't been really any feedback, we still have garnered some good support along the way and 32,000 hits is nothing to balk at. We've posted this nearly anywhere anyone can see it that might matter. It's been on Mass Effect's FB page, posted on character FB pages, sent to VA Twitter accounts, more to show them how much we adore their work than anything else.

If you guys have any other ideas on where this can be posted, by all means run with it or you can let us know and we'll post it. I'm kind of tapped out on ideas as to where this can be placed but I keep doing it. If anybody has Tumblr, that would be helpful as well--you can post it there. Because obviously the more support we garner, the better chance we have for something like this in the end.

I completely agree with this. One of my big issues with Priority: Earth is the complete emotional disconnect. Take the final assault on the Citadel beam - there were people getting blown to pieces right, left and centre, but they were all faceless, meaningless entities that I didn't really care less about. The only two characters of consequence were the two squad-mates that you took with you, and even then, you know they get evacuated anyway.

IMO - literally EVERYONE should have been there for the final assault. The Normandy should have had a skeleton staff, and everyone else should have formed part of the Hammer team. EVERYTHING that the SWORD fleet was doing in orbit was to buy the Hammer team time, for them to get aboard the Citadel. Getting to the Citadel mean't everything, so everyone who could be spared should have been there at the end.

If I were them, I'd release it in Romance DLC - on Valentine's Day. I'd definitely pay for that!

Marvellous idea. I'd pay $$$ for that.

But truth be told, I don't think any of us are really expecting some miraculous character-centric DLC, just for the love interests to be considered in any future DLC content. That's really all I think we can hope for, realistically.

Indeed. It's a shame as I, and I imagine more people, would actually pay $$$ for that, but, realistically, no, not going to happen. Unfortunately.

That being the said, there's a definite case for a continual reminder to BW that we do actually like that side of the game. So in future, you know, if DLCs expand upon what's already in the game, then romancing is in the original game, can we have that expanded please....?

I am hoping for the absolute best. I truly am. And I know I would just open my wallet, and pretty much just say 'Take what you need, I have no better use for this.' They are getting a reminder any chance I get on anything I think they might see that we all enjoy this aspect of the game so much. It makes it more emotional, more fulfilling, more worth fighting the Reapers for something in the end.

We are hoping for expanded conversations and even more, if at all possible. Sure there are many opportunities for character-centric DLC, the history of each character lends itself to that.  But in the meantime, we'll keep telling them how much we love these characters and want more of them.

It's a timely point - what with Omega dropping at the end of November, and people raising eyebrows at the cost. Personally, I'll be getting it, but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have to think about it. Conversely, if they put a Romancing/LI DLC up, they could probably put it up at twice the Omega price and I'd snap it up without hesitation. I hadn't really realized until ME3, but this side of the game, is one of the most important aspects for me personally. It's great. In terms of immersion, it's such a simple, yet brilliant way of heightening the experience. I think the level of my emotional investment topped out when I had that epiphany.

It's also one of the things that sets ME apart - I've tried other games, including other BW games - DA for example, but it's just not the same. Admittedly, DA would actually be a lot closer if your protagonist actually spoke. As it is, she doesn't, and as such, I don't get the same emotional connect that I do in ME. I've tried Alpha Protocol as well, there's romancing in that - it's light years away from ME.

I think, whatever people's opinions of ME3 - in terms of the Romancing and LI, they're on the right lines. What they gave us was great. The ONLY complaint I have on that side of things is that there just isn't enough.

Monday Musing - what a great question!

Personally, I agree with the sentiment of wanting as little customization of the LI as possible. That would just be a step too far, and break the immersion for me. I want to be caught off-guard, that's possibly when it works best. Railroading yourself into a designed relationship just wouldn't be the same. In ME3 for example - Traynor - had no real plans to go down that route. In fact I assumed it would be something similar to Kelly, perhaps some small reward towards the end of the game - but, almost by accident, I ended up going down that path and did not regret it in the slightest. In fact, of all three games, that relationship was the one that felt most natural, and most rewarding.

Part of exploring relationships is not knowing where it's going - through design you take that away to a large degree, and then it's just not the same anymore.

@Bester - I think that was exactly my thoughts as well. I don't take issue with some impact based on the players choices, involvement with said characters, but I like the idea of a certain amount of character autonomy. And as for truly designing said LI, let's face it; there is a good chance that you would end up bored with your choices. Why? Since you would be the designer, all the mystery would be gone...the outcome would be pretty obvious. Now, that isn't to say that some kind of hybrid system for this couldn't work. I would even be interested in seeing a gaming company attempt something like this (without it being shallow/hollow or strictly cosmetic). For myself though, I love exploring the dynamics of these characters based on the character's I RP. A well written character is worth their weight in gold (or something "pixelated" equivalent). :D

25 days without a character & romance thread ?

If I needed any evidence Bioware the ME3 dev team wanted women away from it's games that covered it pretty definitely.
