There are problems with this rule.

First off, many idiots don't abide by it. On top of that, they don't even list their post with **SPOILER** in it, so I end up reading it.

Next, Bioware doesn't even abide by it. The first pinned thread in General Discussion is about the upcoming Ostagar DLC, and yes it has **SPOILER** in the title of the thread, but WHY is it here if they have a spoiler forum?? And do I even need to mention the email they sent out about that DLC? I won't say it here but it was a MAJOR spoiler to someone who just started the game (like me).

And finally what I see as the biggest problem ... people who haven't finished the game won't go to the spoiler forum because they don't want things ruined. What's wrong with the normal way of just placing **SPOILER** in a post before you type, that way as people are reading it, they can just avoid it. I just don't see that the current setup is working.

I just saw a thread where someone asked about health potions. Someone else posted where they could get unlimited Elfroot and that thread was closed because of spoilers? I read it and it didn't spoil anything and that got me to thinking ... where are people who haven't finished this game supposed to get help? :?

Personally my policy is to not read anything, wiki or forums, about a game which I am not interested in spoling for myself.

All the tools required to beat the game are readily available in the game itself. Look no further than your codex and the journal itself to reveal the secrets of the game. I have beaten the game and I'm doing my second and third playthrus, all on my own.

There is a vast difference in what people consider "spoiler". As such it is very difficult to "police". Main plot lines should be avoided but many people are eager to help and will post what could be considered potential spoilers while trying to be helpful. You must also consider that many people are enthusiastic about the game and simply read only what they want to missing the "no spoilers" part.

I agree with the OP that the Return to Ostagar thread (and the way it has been advertised) can spoil the game and the own DLC. That discussion should have been moved to the Spoiler forum.

I have agree with the OP. They should make the General forum require game registration, and have the spoilers one not require registration. Most spoilers are given by people who have not registered the game.

Also agree with helpful information and spoiler information. Telling somewhere they can find unlimited elf root is a lot different then telling them that (KOTOR Spoiler). One is helpful information that doesn't ruin the storyline of the game, the other ruins the storyline.

Be reasonable. Assume that people posting and reading here do not want their game spoiled. If they can be helped by giving away a little information about the game (setting aside for now the question of how else you are supposed to help someone) then do so, but keep that to a minimum.

ETA Agree with eisberg that the spoilers forum could be open to all, but not sure about this one being closed to nubs. Also, the Revenant in the Western B******** F***** is your father. Search your feelings. you know it to be true.

The forums are poorly moderated. The only way to really bring it under control would be to pay a team of people to watch it constantly.

This whole site was not designed properly from the git go. The Moderators complain that we are not following the rules. What rules? They break them all the time themselves!

Here's a potential solution: The fan posts whatever he/she wants. However, the post will not appear immediately. The post goes through a filter where a Moderator scans the title and content. The Moderator then places the post in the appropriate forum. It takes the decision out of the fan's hands and puts the decision squarely in the Moderator's hands, WHERE THE DECISION UTIMATELY LIES!! What's so hard about this?

It's not always easy to avoid spoilers because of what some people consider spoilers. I don't mean to say there's no spoiler problem on these boards, however it's often ridiculous how some people react to the slightest hint of something story-related. Does it really spoil your fun with the game if you know that the dog is a real dog, no... that there is a dog in the game even? Some things shouldn't be talked about here, some should be clearly marked as spoilers, and also some people need to relax a little, it seems they're almost hunting down small spoilers just to complain about them loudly.

If you spent less time crying on forums and more time playing the game, you would have been finished by now and wouldn't have to worry about spoliers. Logic. Employ it, please.

Right, because anyone who didn't buy it the day it came out and play it nonstop until they were done is a crybaby and not an uber-cool person such as yourself. The people who will get the game on Christmas should probably even be shot as they didn't buy it sooner and deserve to have the whole game ruined for them. Logic ... you might want to look up what that word means.

All in all the moderation is ok most of the time. But I still remember one post, where even a moderator had a spoiler in his post.

I deliberately avoided to read the Return to Ostagar thread on purpose. At least it was obvious, that the risk of seeing a spoiler was there.

By now there are some fan-sites up where you can get information about the game and gameplay, if you need help. I actually went fine without needing to ask anything in the forum. Perhaps the spoiler-sensitive player should avoid to read any kind of forum.

Oh, perhaps I should avoid the forums then, because that would probably mean to have the same questions asked over and over again between the years. *sigh*

So why exactly are you coming to the forums? If, according to your own words, even Bio is posting spoilers left and right, not to mention not enforcing the no spoiler policy, wouldn't it be more prudent to not visit the forums until you finish the game? From the tone of your posts you come off as a self-entitled 14 year old kid, mad that mommy didn't buy him Modern Warfare 2 for Christmas.

Given the lack of documentation, that is not a viable approach for DAO.

There's no way to know how the game's mechanics work without visiting the forum.

All the tools required to beat the game are readily available in the game itself.

Assuming beating the game is your objective.  If enjoying the playing of the game is what matters (as it does to most people - look how many people play RPGs and say they enjoy them without having finished them yet), then simply beating the game is irrelevant.

WHAT!!??  Aw man now you ruined Star Wars: KOTOR for me! Why didn't you tag that!?

Heh anyway yes this forum is riddled with spoilers.  They just need some more modiraters.  Hell alot of us are regulars on on here all the time. They might want to even hand out the job to a few site regulars.  (Not me though)Posted Image

So What do you do the rest of the time, just run around and look at stuff?  Plus, this game is to short not to beat.  Hell, I did it on accident. I figured there would be more after  the ???? ????, but nope, just the final battle.

Once people like this move on to the next shiny new game in a couple of months, most of the problem will go away.

There are probably some regulars who spend more time here than even the moderators. But Bioware has very strict requirements as to who they choose for a mod. For example, you can't ever say anything bad about x, y, or z.

Wow, reactionary post is reactionary.

kevinwastaken, first off, flaming isn't acceptable. If you have a problem with someone, tell a moderator and we'll deal with it. If you continue as you are, you'll be taking a little vacation.

purplesunset, nowhere do we ever say, don't badmouth or say something negative about the game, or x,y,z whatever. Our policy is don't flame other community members. The Bioware devs have coated the game with some special flame retardant material that can handle all the negativity you can throw at it. I personally discourage threads like "This game sucks" because it's totally non-constructive. It tells the developers nothing about WHAT you don't like, so they can make it better...but we don't delete/modify/lock posts that are negative in a constructive way. It's just silly, you can learn more from negativity most of the time than you can positives.

Soretooth and Zenon, if you see a moderator posting a spoiler, and it hasn't had the thread moved, please let them, and other moderators know. Believe it or not, we're all actual human beings over here moderating and we make mistakes as well. We all have many tabs open so we can watch all the forums and mistakes do happen occasionally when we forget which tab we're in and which forum we're posting under. While we get that you guys aren't moderators, we do ask for help keeping an eye on things because as some of you said, the regulars often spend more ime around here than we do.

As for the original poster...what would you suggest? We are bringing in more moderators to help out, but your assertion that the current system isn't working lacks any meaningful proof. Even with a hundred moderators constantly scanning the forums, spoilers would still leak out. We get to them as fast as we can. If you were privy to the sheer amount of threads we move/change each day perhaps you'd have a different take on what is or isn't working.

You say just have the system of posting *SPOILER* before a spoiler, and that will somehow fix the problem? You're now requiring everyone to have the same idea of what a spoiler is, and that everyone will take the time to post *SPOILER* before what they type. It's EXACTLY the same as asking people to post in the appropriate forum, and not post spoilers in the title.

The ONLY problem I see (and I'm trying to get it changed) is that the top forum and the only forum that doesn't require registration, is the NO SPOILER general forum. My personal preference is that the 1st forum to appear in the list would be the spoiler general forum, and that neither the spoiler and no spoiler forums would be open to non-registered posting. That way the people that don't know any better and don't pay attention post by default into the spoiler forum. Personally, I feel that would solve a LOT of the accidental posting of spoilers.

My son's first and middle name has an X and Y in this name, so I say nothing bad about those letters.  I like Z alot because when you put a bunch of those together, zzzzzzzzzzz, it reminds me of one of my favorite activities.  Does that make me a shoe in for moderator?

What you are saying is pointless and stupid.
Now my saying this is deliberately provocative, and serves no other purpose than demeaning you personally. I am contributing nothing to the thread and the issues it raises.
So I have to apologise for my conduct and play no further part in this discussion. Not even to respond to any reply you might have. My advice would be not to rise to the bait because it would be a waste of time.

Edit: mods turned up whilst typing, apology stands.
