Not sure if anyone has commented on this in the past but it stuck me as kind of odd.
I missed the history lesson on the Grey Wardens but it got me thinking, how did it all start?
Was it a case of a lone warrior abushed by Darkspawn, caught in a epic battle with uncountable foes.
When he/she was finaly victorious they sat among the carnage and thought ...
"Well! , that was thirsty work, what is there to drink around here?"
Really? Have you seen the state of those things? Would you honestly bleed one cause you feel a bit parched?
And then what happened? How did said hero discover drinking the stuff could kill you?
Did they offer some to their mates? " 'ere mate, you gotta try this stuff, it's such a trip, will knock you bloody socks off!"
....
"Oh, what happened there then?"
Just something that crossed my mind
The Joining? Who's idea was that?

thought occurred to me as well.
maybe it was an early mage who came up with the idea? you know mages, they like to experiment with things.

Hey, come on, have you looked at my character, i'm lvl ten. This is my first character and i'm enjoying the game.
Have I finished the game? I can never understand how players can enjoy an epic story when they play from start to finish in about 10 hours.
I could spend hours just going through the party dialogue.

later on in the game it will be revealed exactly what the purpose of the joining really is. i won't give away the spoiler, its a pretty big reveal.
they didn't do it just for ****s and giggles. its the only way to stop a blight. and its the reason only grey wardens can stop a blight.

I never finished the game in less than 50 hours, don't start making assumptions here.
anyway, I hadn't checked your profile. Some of your questions will be addressed late in the game. Anyway, it wasn't a crazy random happenstance, the first grey wardens were actively looking for a way to defeat the blight, and they came up with the joining. Also it involves more than just drinking some darkspawn blood.

That was a legitimate question, since your question is kind of answered at the end of the game. And the game has been released 6 weeks ago, that's more then enough time to finish the game, unless you don't have much time to play. So, I guess you won't have a full answer without big spoilers.

Spoiler
If they'd "killed" the archdemon without being grey wardens and then noticed that some random darkspawn kept being imbued with it, I'm sure they pieced it together.

It probably happened as part of someone's elaborate practical joke.
Grey Warden 1 "Ha ha ha can you believe Garnak actually drank that crap."
Grey Warden 2 "Yea I know. He'll fall for anything".
Something like that.

It was probably a dare. Just like the first guy to eat an egg.
"Hey Og, Grok dare you to eat that thing from chicken butt."
