Paragon Lost, the story of James Vega before ME3, that I can deal with, its something new! But the Mass Effect movie said to be developed by Legendary Pictures upsets me. Here are a few reasons why:
  • Fans already know how the story begins and ends.
  • Its pointless going to watch Mass Effect in movie form when instead you could just play the game!
  • The plot decisions made by the director (eg, who dies on Virmire, who becomes Shepards LI, and the status of Wrex) have the potential to upset a lot of fans.
  • Content explored in the movie that wasnt explored in game will leave us confused.
  • The script has the potential to contradict certain in game events.
  • It will take time out of possible game development (I would prefer a game to a film).
  • Portrayal of either a male of female Commander Shepard could lead to accusations that you favour one over the other.
  • You're not appealing to your target audience (gamers).
  • Movies based on games tend to be unsuccesful, it's risky.
  • Characters being played by people other than their in game voice actor may annoy some fans.
Updated reasons:
  • Content cut from the movie due to time constraints could jepordise the flow of the narrative.
  • A movie series would be difficult to continue after ME1. Can you imagine how much content would have to be cut from an ME2 movie? It would be completly different to the game.
  • There are so many other stories that could be explored. A lot of people who will watch the movie would have already played ME1, for them, they arn't experiencing anything new. The first contact war would be better represented as movie than a game because the events of the first contact war happened prior to ME1 and as such there is little room for decision making.
  • Some of the actors may not be familiar with the characters they are playing, and there is a possibility that they could represent them in a way completely different to the game.
  • If the movie ends up being bad, it will forever be recognised as a smear on a fantastic franchise. Also, if the movie is bad, some critics who havent played the games may decide to tar them with the same brush.
  • You're going to upset Singapore again if we get some Liara on Shep action.
Poll results as of 02/07/2012 19:43:
The Mass Effect movie will be a success! - 21% (34 Votes).
The Mass Effect movie will only be successful if it is based on something other than the main trilogy. - 43% (69 Votes).
The Mass Effect movie will fail! - 36% (59 Votes).
Please continue voting!

To put it simply, I think a movie based on the events of ME1 will be really bad and could let down the series to people that haven't experienced the games. Is anybody else feeling this?

Wait, it's guaranteed to be on the events of ME1? Because if so, yes, I hate this movie.

I am ardently opposed to the ME movie.

I honestly wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't going to revolve around Shepard. The main draw of the games is that you're the one partaking in the events of the universe, and you're the one undergoing their execution and witnessing the outcome based on your decisions. You're the one making the choices, easy or hard. Having that handed out to you in a canon form is just insulting, both to the fans and the games themselves.

If it were a spin-off or was set during a different point in time (First contact war, for example, or the backstory of a particular character), then ti wouldn't bother me.

And this is just my opinion, but I would much rather see an animated ME film than live action. If it's live action, it will be so bloated with obvious CG it just won't be enjoyable. I don't want to see a real actor talking to thin air, with a digitized elcor or turian added in later during production.

Protosevich and the producers have stated that the film will follow the plot of the original game.

I'll watch Paragon Lost, and I'd watch a spin off film, but one based around ME1 is both insulting and moronic!

:crying:

It's going to be a bit hard to find someone worthy to play Shepard. I guess to make this easier I should go play a soldier John Shepard  with default background and romance Liara. It's what's going to happen.

I agree completely. I thought that this was a bad idea from the beginning, especially because of the choices. I might watch it to see how bad it is though

Christian Bale had better sign on to play Shepard.

Prequel movie = awesome. I know how the story ends, but it could be a neat rid to get there.

ME1 move = awesome. Draws more people into a franchise with a great setting, great characters, and a great world (the single best aspect) and might even spawn a playable remake of the ME1 game with the 90's gaming garbage removed.

Prequel game = FAIL.

Any reasons why we should welcome the movie? I'm genuinely asking because I really want to enjoy it.

I couldn't care less if they make a movie. It will be decent at best, but nothing great. It's a video game movie.

I agree that a prequel movie would be good. But if the Mass Effect movie turns out to be terrible, it would infact put people off of the Mass Effect franchise and portray it in an mediocre manner. As for a prequel game, I could deal with that as long as it was good.

Meh. Can't see any purpose for a Mass Effect movie than a shameless game tie-in. Just keep Uwe Boll out of it.

I can't name a single video game movie that has been a blockbuster. Developers should just stick to what they do best!

I would love a Mass Effect movie, either based on ME1, or First Contact War, as long as it is done well. Mass Effect really has the potential to become the next big "Mainstream" sci-fi universe.

But only if the movie is done with style. It can be about space lasers and explosions. It has to be about the lore. About the story.

If the first game is made into a movie, people will just have to accept that they are going to go down the male-paragon path.

-Rachni will be saved.
-Ash will be saved on Virmire.
-Either Ash or Liara will be LI.
-Wrex will survive.
-Council will be saved.
etc.

I think that it has a lot of potential.

I do not want a Movie.

I want a TV series, the sheer amount of stuff we can see and do during the games, and the amount of characters and the lore.. it would only work well in TV format. Give it to HBO and watch them bring it to life properly.

If most of the fans didn't want a live action movie then why does Hollywood keep making video game based movies.  Btw the whole "we already know the ending" is a straw-mann because you could say that about comics, novels, and remakes.  If you were really opposed then you wouldn't be here talking about video game based movies whether they're Hollywood or Idependent films.

I wouldn't want one. It's kinda like making a movie out of a book, ya know the book is always better. Besides they couldn't fix plot holes with hundreds of hours, what are they gonna do in two hours? Plus is it gonna be a male or female Shep?

I am opposed to the movie. In a nutshell, I am afraid of what they do to the characters, it would be betraying the idea that you create your own Shepard and that there is no Canon Shepard, and it will ****** all ME fans off, especially when it comes to LI and Virmire. I think we can all see why a ME movie would be a bad idea just for the last two things I mention.

Ah, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the movie Shepard is the canon Shepard. It is just -a- canon Shepard.
