Pre-release, most were convinced that it would be a device capable of disabling, weakening, or otherwise incapacitating the reapers and/or their shields. Completing the game proper (without the EC), however, reveals that it's nothing more than a very large plot device with a superfluous shell: at best, it is responsible for (inexplicably) "creating new possibilities" for the Catalyst (whatever that is) by "changing" it (for whatever that explanation is worth).
With the EC's "refusal" ending, rock falls and everyone dies, leaving the next generation of spacefaring species to create their own Crucible, the fact of which follow the immediate questions:
- If the Catalyst was "changed," why was a new Crucible even necessary?
- If a new Crucible wasn't necessary, whyTF did the Catalyst not simply transport someone
- If a new Crucible was necessary, does this mean the "change" only temporary?
- If a new Crucible was necessary and was built, exactly what choice did the next cycle take?
Obviously not all of these answers can be extrapolated from the brief "epilogue," but they are worthy questions to ask, because I quite feel like the Catalyst makes less sense than it did before.
