First let me state a fact, the main plot of mass effect is the conflict with the Reapers, but as we learned at the end is in actually a conflict between organics and synthetics. The Starkid states that the synthetics will utimatley kill all organics life, and if this is true then it means that when there were no reapers around there must have been a huge war between the organics and the synthetics. My theory is, that as a last resort to defeat the sythetics the organics made the citadel along with the reapers, but that is when everything went wrong, because the Starkid also stated the the created will always rebel against the creators, meaning that the AI that controlled the reapers went rough, and decided to kill everything. Therefore basing on my theory the best choice for the ending is not the green ending, it's actually the blue ending, because in the green ending the new species of hybrids can make synthetics again, and the whole cycle starts again, but in the blue ending they always have shepard to give justice in space.
my theory of what really happened

Actually, it is explained that *The Thing* was created to act as mediator between organic and synthetic life and then after a while it suddenly decided that things aren't going to work out and devised the concept of The Cycle as we came to know it.
It was stated that the it turned it's creators into the first Reaper, though they did not approve. For all intents and purposes, this was the first instance of the created turning against the creator.
It's all very involved apparently.

Huh....and to think that I only came into this thread to get a good laugh. But you actually used logic and reasoning to state your opinion. Good job.
