I remember always loving Bioware since I first played through KotOR many years ago. I loved the fleshed out, unique sci-fi environment that had so much culture and character. I loved going to the cities and talking with the people there, it left a warm, fuzzy feeling to know that after school, I could venture to a beautiful galaxy ripe with adventure.

Then I heard about Mass Effect. Hot darn was I pumped! Being underaged at the time, I had to go to a local gaming store to rent the game. A store that didn't normally check ID (hehe), which I'm sure Bioware doesn't condone, but whatever. And then it happened, I got thrust into an even more original, more fantastical galaxy ripe with adventure and well as a fantastic Cuthulu-esque enemy.

The Reapers, love interests, and combat always took a back seat for me. I wanted to explore The Citadel. Everytime I started a new game, I couldn't wait to get past Eden Prime so I could engulf myself in the atmosphere of the Mass Effect universe, which is just... oohhh so good. Rememer that warm, fuzzy feeling I mentioned earlier form KotOR? That time a billion. I loved visiting Noveria, getting mixed up in some of the politics there and never forgetting to glance out the window to remember where I was. Beautiful.

Then the Normandy. It was SUCH a badass ship! And the characters aboard were all interesting. I would repeart conversations with characters just to relive the atmosphere. The epic set pieces such as Ilos and the final battle took sort of a back seat to me. I would pace myself through the slower "Hub" areas and quench my atmospheric thirst. I loved the universe.

And when Mass Effect 2 came out, they further showed off their beautiful galaxy. Illium is so rich, so beautiful, and so full of atmosphere. Like Miranda said, it was a cultural marvel and the pinacle of my Mass Effect experience. The Illium missions will always be the most looked forward to in my opinion. Exploring the city, killing thugs, and doing things tah Han Solo would be most likely to do on his off days while Luke was out saving the galaxy.

Mass Effect 3 is amazing, but it is my least favorite in the trilogy.

And this has nothing to do with "Oh they forgot my love interest" or  "The ending sucks I want an FMV of LI's naked body!" It has to do with the fact that the rich culture exploration of the galaxy was over. It was time to save it, not explore it, which was inevitable. The game is the shortest in the trilogy and features only one hub world. THe Citadel was just... different. The only action-y mission there was the Cerberus attack and the side quests were too similar to DA2's lame fetch quests. (DA2 was also great in my opinion. again, more based on the world and not the "epic" stuff) DId you notice that throughout ME3, we didn't get to shoot ONE Turian, Salarian, Asari, Merc, or LOKI Mech. We didn't get to land on some random planet and find an ancient artifact. It was very much a disconnect from the cultural marvel that Illium was. I was disappointed, because I saw the concept art for Thessia. It was purple, atmospheric, and I couldn't wait to explore it and talk to the inhabitants about the Reaper threat or maybe just killing some local thugs. But sadly, it was just a burning, action oriented locale for what I saw as the game's turning point storywise.

But ME3 is still amazing. The Citadel still has some great atmospheric moments and venues like Purgatory or conversations around the Presidium. The gameplay was soooo good. The action was fluid, and everything was fun to kill, except for the Reapers... I've never been much of a fan of the Zombie, Flood, or monsterous creatures in games.

I stil have high hopes for he franchise! I hope Bioware goes more into the direction of exploring the gorgeous galaxy they've created, and I hope they do the same for the Dragon Age franchise. And I know they have the creativity to came up with even more engrossing IPs in the future. The ending mostly disappointed me because i left my beloved galaxy in ruin. And now, it won't be thanks the the Team's hard work on the Extended Cut.

Thank you Bioware! I intend to stick with you guys until you LITERALLY flip me off. I can't wait to poke back and play some of your older games that were before my time, like Baldur's Gate!

I love love LOVE Mass Effect. I will continue to wear my N7 shirt until it disintegrates or Harbinger incinerates it.

Why do YOU love Mass Effect?? :o

Wow....second thread today where the use of logic and reasoning are present. And was that also a hint of appreciation? Good job OP.

A reason why I'm posting this... I'm sick of the whining and complaining and most posters here sound like Jr. High girls who watch too much anime. Just saying.

Aside from the endings, there really isn't ANYTHING bad about the entire Mass Effect trilogy.
(as long as you make the right choices so you won't have to put up with cloned Rachni Queen, fake Legion, LI cheating/dying etc. etc.)

Unfortunately that's a rather long list, but my canon Shepard managed to avoid any of that garbage.
And the result is that at least my canon playthrough is AWESOME and mostly logical. For that, I love, adore and worship everyone who contributed to this masterpiece of storytelling and art. Image IPBImage IPBImage IPB

I sincerely hope they will continue to improve it.

In order for me to explain why I love Mass Effect, I would have to go into so much detail that not even I could explain properly and it would take way too long to do. That's how great it is. I really don't like seeing hate threads on here about anything that has to do with Mass Effect. Characters, endings, whatever. I don't agree with the way BioWare ended the trilogy but all this hate is just discouraging.

I agree with OP 100% Even though I love the epic set pieces and the action and all that. The feeling of exploring unknown worlds is the core reason I love ME, it so reminds me of the wonder that series like Star Trek and Star Wars has. That is why I love fantasy and Sci Fi, it is the exploration of the unkown and wonderous. To me, ME3 is the strongest of the 3 in a gameplay sense, as it has the best action and some very great moments. But ME1 and ME2 did give me the sense of exploration, which is the most important thing to me. That is why I love Skyrim and those kinds of games, because the story is not as important compared to the discovery of exotic and interesting locations, cultures and creatures of all shapes.

I do hope they make another ME game, a prequal or something set in a more peacefull time would be great, with lots of hub worlds and just places to explore. Like seeing Palaven, Thessia in all its glory. Think of a ME games, but with the freedom of a game like Skyrim. that would be amazing.

Edit: I am also one of those that could explain exactly why I love ME in detail, but that would take so many pages that no one would read it.

I love Mass Effect because it offers a fresh story in sci-fi and a universe rich in detail. Despite how bad the original endings were (extended cut redeems it in my eyes) Mass Effect was a terrific journey.

Just think happy thoughts, right? The terribly written conclusion of what is otherwise a great series will go away if we just think happy thoughts.

The universe felt fully realized and fleshed out... lived in, like the original Star Wars. When we first saw the Citadel in ME1, where Joker was talking to traffic control while weaving between alien spaceships, Mass Effect felt real, like it was a thing that could exist in the future.

The main characters seemed like real people.

The story was interesting, and the fact that there were multiple ways to go about it was new and exciting.

Hear, hear, OP! Mass Effect is the best trilogy out there in any medium. Because of the discussions it has generated, I believe that it has even rivaled or even surpassed other greats like Deus Ex. It sucks us into this wonderful universe, its people, its races, its cultures, and its religions. We explore planets with breathtaking vistas and skylights, and read up on special planets and their significance in the galaxy and its history. If that wasn't enough, volumes of information in our Codices (plural of codex) are available at the click of a mouse button (or controller button), all revealing more about this universe. They gave us all the reasons to love it and fight for it in ME3, and based on all that information, as well as our decisions, give us the power to decide its future.

The graphics, the music, the combat, the dialogue, and the overall atmosphere and characters are stellar beyond any recognition. Special moments like the conversation with the Rachni queen, the standoff with Wrex on Virmire, encountering the Thorian and Shiala's Cipher, speaking with Vigil, Sovereign, and Saren, the final Citadel battle... to our headbutting contests with TIM, Tali's loyalty mission on the migrant fleet, the conversations with Legion and Thane and Mordin... to rescuing and speaking to Eve, the Krogan female; bro-fisting Wrex, capping Udina ( :) ), the return to Eden Prime and its aftermath, reuniting the Quarians and Geth, the mission on Thessia, sticking it to Cerberus, and the conversation (EC version) with the Catalyst right down to the EC ending (synthesis for me)... all great moments I will never forget. Many emotional, tear-jerking moments. Such beauty in what they say ("The last echo that came from the singing planet"... "Her spirit will be the midwife of my firstborn")...

"Amazing" doesn't do the universe justice. It is beyond amazing. It's too beautiful beyond words. This trilogy will forever remain in my heart, not just as a video game, but as a story and a universe.

I'm definitely more into the idea of future ME games being in the future. But a more reconstructed future with maybe some new races coming into the fray. Much more on the level of DA2 in terms of the story. Maybe a whole game set only on the Citadel and a few other planets? I would absolutely adore it if they set up a character development system similar to DA:O. I can live without a fully voiced main protagonist.

Not since George Lucas fails to make such a rich and beautiful universe, while BioWare not created Mass Effect. But while Star Wars universe is full of idealistic, flying superheroes in this universe  heroes are ordinary soldiers and scientists. Evil is in  much more measurable and tangible form. Good does not fight for ideals but for survival.
I like the darker shades of  the story, the sense of approaching doom and  race against the time. Everyone is mortal - the protagonist ( Shepard ), his/her teammates and fiends.
Also i like that the game ( story and tone ) are for big guys/girls.There have violance, blood, hard language and sex.
Mass Effect looks most  like sci-fi psycho horror  istead of some cheesy Marvel movie maked  for 8 years old kids.
I like  that BioWare  try to explain every aspect of the universe. How works Mass Reelays, engines and weapons principles, how some individuals become biotics .....  oooh  yes Biotics ... another amazing idea - cheers mr. BioWare writer.. Until mr. Yoda just have some  *force*  , biotic idea is very well explained. May be exactly biotics make Mass Effect universe unique .. hmm.  .
Also i like the idea of "hard choice"  - "which one to save - Kaidan or Ash ? "

Anyway, amazing job BioWare ! Cheers !

May be mr. / ms. Shepard is dead but Mass Effect universe not, i hope.

I agree with you op, though I personally feel all the games are equal in my judgement of them, but that's because the exploration never captivated me like it did others.

That's my own thing though, I'm weird like that. Mass effect's trilogy is great, and the endings are patched up enough to hold the series to the finishing line.

I like the overall series.

I strongly dislike the endings to the 3rd game (EC or no). I probably wouldn't dislike the third game in general if the endings weren't so abysmal and thematically retarded.

The major characters. Especially Mordin, Thane, Tali, Garrus, and Wrex.

The banter between characters. This has been... a theme in BW games since back in the glory days of Black Isle. Baldur's Gate, you were a severe detriment to my sleep schedule. Mass Effect has been too.

The music. Even at launch, when I was a little bitter over the endings, my initial reaction wasn't "wtf", it was "I love this piano score". The music has consistently been good, and has definitely gotten better over the course of the series...

I like ME (over DA) it feels very original. the aliens, while easy to stereotype, offer something very interesting. Its got a lot of promise. I liked the mass effect relays, and the ganache-level richness of most of the core characters. I didn't really know much about ME1 except it was space rpg. I like rpg. Didn't really like space stuff. But the story and characters sold it to me, and I loved it.

The OP is correct, as with any other series or book explaining a new world(s), there must eventually come a time where that is put aside and a conclusion takes over. I missed not being able to see more new things, but thats what other games are for.

I love Mass Effect, but not for the gameplay (which is still great, but not why I love it). I love it for almost everything else. It is the most rich and creative universe I've ever experienced, accompanied by fantastic characters, an epic story, gorgeous visual design, excellent sound design and a consistantly top-notch score. My experience and journey in this series will stay with me forever.

Thank you, Bioware! I cannot wait to see what else you've got in store for this fantastic universe!

Simply put, characters, setting, lore and gameplay.

I just hope ME4 ditches the weak unstoppable galactic threat monsters part. Mass Effect would have been so much better without the Reapers...
