Building the Crucible is the plot of the game. It's not a McGuffin. If there was some secret "key" that we were chasing from mission to mission -- some object that didn't really mean or do anything other than justify each subsequent mission or scene -- THAT would be a mcguffin. Like the Pink Panther diamond, or the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. Building the crucible is the narrative that explains why the hell we're collecting "war assets" and why helping Kasumi and the true-Rachni queen matter. That a PLOT, not a trivial item that means nothing. It represents progress across the game. When Hackett looks out that big window after Mordin's mission and you see the huge structure coming together -- yeah, that's important. And at the end of the game when then thing turns the Citadel and the relays into a HUGE-RED-JET-OF-KILL-ALL-SYNTHETICS -- yeah, that's a tangible manifistation of it the Crucible's true importance.
Thank you!
I can understand the reactions to the Catalyst a bit more. Although I'd also disagree there was no foreshadowing of it. It's not what I anticipated - or what I'd have liked - out of it, but after the conversation with Sovereign on Virmire, the one question it just dodges outright is "who created you?", and that struck me as important.
EC is an improvement. I'm glad it was done. I thought Reject was brilliant, and it is my favorite ending (though not necessarily always the one I'll pick), I don't see it as a middle finger nor particularly understand how it would be...
...does Bioware deserve credit? Well, in the strictest terms, yes, 'cause they wrote/directed/programmed/animated all this. That's why the names of all those Bioware employees roll at the end of the game. Credit specifically for listening to fans and producing the EC? I think by and large the reaction to it says yes. Some people still angry. I'm not. I wish it had been shipped like this, sure, and I hope this doesn't become a theme. The game clearly needed more time in dev, and it's a shame that in so much of the industry, delaying a blue-chip launch is such a taboo. I'd rather wait a few more months than get an incomplete product.
Also, first post... I've finally been suckered in...
