Thats your first problem right there.....dont listen to people on here, half the people will scream to hard, others will whinge its too easy.

Second....who tries a brand new game on the hardest difficulty on there first playthrough?

And dont sweat it, in some battles while on Hard lve knocked it down to Easy.
Theres no reward for "beating the game" on Nightmare with no deaths....other then some minor ego boost.

Play for fun.

Yeah, whilst you maybe a fan of RPGs and what not, playing on the hardset setting first with no real idea of how the game plays other than what you've read on here, isn't the smartest move.

Me after getting my butt kicked on normal, I put it down to easy level and I'll happily admit that I am still playing on easy on my 4th playthrough, but after this one (where I intend to get the 'funky' no death achievements) I intend to try cranking it up to normal as I've learned a lot about how the game works, all the situations I'll be facing and got an okay-ish idea of good ways to setup a party.

Don't give up, your not beaten yet :)

Yes, you're right, but we get to come to the forums with the I'm Kind of a Big Nightmare Deal attittude!  I would never have tried it in my first playthrough though.

I already got my *I am kind of big deal* achievement so I can admit now that I did my first playthrough on easy and I got my ass handed to me more than once too.

Playing the game you have no clue about on hardest and then giving up is not something I would expect from someone that isnt total noob in games imo.

My first time through this game i constantly got thrashed. It was absolutely horrid. My friends somehow beat the game and they would ask me

"bro, whatd you think of dragon age?"

and i would slowly, sadly reply

"...i dont know, i keep getting mobbed on by wolf packs and back ally gangsters to find out...my warrior has three concussions, my rogue lost an arm..morrigan has so many injuries she has to lay on a stretcher... we've had moderate success having sten wheel morrigan as fast as he can into a group of enemies, then pray to god she casts a spell in time...."

after they were finished laughing at me they tried to help me out and i found most of my issues were with stat building, i still dont have it down to a science but its way easier.

Thats it! I give up!:pinched: This game is so hard! At first i was playing at nightmare mode, cause a lot of people here say that it's just a breeze, but for me it's a literal nightmare, so i tried the hard mode, well i did manage to get far until i met these bounty hunter with a blood mage that throws a fireball that knockdowns my whole party leaving us with half of our hp while being slah and hack to death by qunari warriors... So i took a different route and then again i met these blood mage again with a band of qunari warriors and the same thing happen again. I'm not a noob at RPG, i've played alot of RPG, but this one its so hard... Maybe i'm playing on a console that's why im having a hard time managing my party... Oh well, i'll play now on Normal from now on.

Very true :P if I listened to what everyone here said I wouldn't get anywhere lol
My first play through was on easy and about half way through i bumped it up to normal for more of a "challenge", on my second it was normal all the way, but still had to turn it down to easy for some of the hard fights (this was all due to a pure party build) now that ive got the party mechanics and tactic system mostly figured out im now playing as a mage (which I find to be the hardest to build properly) and its on hard, and im finding it loads more fun now :o
Just do whatever you want and at whatever skill lvl you are, if its too hard then just crank the level down till your comfortable.

The only thing's I've found hard are surprise mobs and the hardest bosses. This is on normal.
But once I got the Repulsion spell, then the surprise mobs became a piece of cake.
Hardly ever use a potion anymore once I got blood magic.
I should probably bump the difficulty up to hard, and see what happens... ;)

You want hard? Try soloing the Demogorgan in Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal with Ascension installed, on the highest difficulty setting.

Please. Don't remind me of that bastard.

20+ tries? No probably alot more from what i remember and i still only had a handful of party members alive. I got so annoyed with this fight i was screaming at the screen. Think the crazy German unreal tournament kid from youtube,

Nightmare is easy when you know the game mechanics, but before that you just play on normal.

Though couple thing that will help immensely. Have a proper tank. If you're using Alistair, get 42 str and 26 dex right away so you can get all the sword'board skills and use tier 7 massive armor. First skills you should get are shield wall and shield tactics I think it's called. It will make him immune to regular knockdowns and he can't be flanked.

After that, try and balance some points in to con, willpower then just put everything in dex to up your defense skill. If you got The Stone Prisoner DLC installed I recommend getting 45 str so you can use the +12 con neckless and still meet the armor requirements. While all of these things are important to make Alistair a badass tank. The most useful skill which you should get pretty much the moment you get him is taunt. If Alistair alone is taking damage then every fight will be a lot easier to manage.

Next thing you'll need is a mage specialized in healing. Either Wynne, or you make Morrigan in to a healer or your PC character. But at least one mage with heal, regeneration, group heal and lifeward will make your life so much easier.

If you got both tanking and healing covered then there is really nothing in the game that should stop you.

Another useful tip is just control the characters your self, use pause a lot, and try and spread out so if say a archer use scattershot, your whole team doesn't end up stunned.

Its not just your group-members needs experience - its you too :wizard:

It will take a while to get "behind" the combat system. Im playing on hard currently and its really cool :o

Just play a bit  more. You'll see how everythings working by time. I died really often in my first walkthrough and was just wondered, why everyone was speaking about a good game :D

If you're not enjoying the game on the highest skill levels, there's no shame in turning down the difficulty. It's just a game.

But, yes, Use tactics and be smart about leveling-up. Like most RPGS where the enemies level with you, it's possible to build weak characters if your not careful. Chances are your not using your characters properly or not leveling them properly. Play on an easier level until you learn full control.

First time I played through, I was a sword and board and got my ass kicked outside of lothering repeatedly (not the group of people, but the bandits with the dogs). A few days later after nearly giving up on the game, I re-rolled another character and got through the rest of it on normal pretty easily.

Games like these always take some getting used to. Usually by mid or end game you realize there was some important aspect of the game you had been completely ignoring. At least I seem to do that in every RPG I play. If anyone has ever played Lost Odyssey, I didn't realize how immortals gain abilities until nearly the end of the game. I had to run around grinding experience just so I could gain all these abilities I should have been progressively getting.

I'd first ask, are you playing the game in "real time", or ar you playing the game Dungeons and Dragons style?

This game is meant to be played Dungeons and Dragons style - that is why the warrior class is the suckiest  :) -. The basic way you play, you have to balance the skills and talents of your party members to complement each other, and when you encounter a specfic situation, you pause your game, then you "program" each character to do something depending on the situation -change your armor, weapon, fighting style, what potions to take depending on what/who you are facing, etc, then un-pause, sit back, and watch the fight.

This game is not like, say, Oblivion, where combat is real time: you get into combat and you use your controls to actually fight,or just run away, you can dodge projectiles, etc, and you cannot change anything about your player until the fight ends.

Personally, I detest the D&D system, but this game is much more than just combat. If it were strictly combat, I would not have bought it. What I do to "balance" the combat aspect  into something closer to  "real time" combat, I use the construction set to alter a couple of my stats, so, while I don't make my character indestructible, I still can survive certain attacks and use my character to fight without having to depend on a companion to heal me  or a combination of spells or whatnot.

Don't be so hard on yourself. Some ppl just want to post their epeen prowess on any forum and try to belittle other   before they can even say a thing.

I play on easy and seriously i'm having a blast.I prefeer it like that. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. It's not a mmorpg .. You're playing a game with a story and if the difficulties of the game make your time less fun .. Than why continue it at the highest difficulties. You're just hurting yourself .

You don't want  to set correctly the tactic option? You don't want to exploit LOS?You don't want to position your crew at the right spot before every encounter? You don,t want to fight with the best ugly looking armor of the game? You don't want to play each encoutner with the perfect crew set-up?You don't want to spec for the most overpwoered abilities?(Cookie cutter) .

The AI ain't brighter on higher difficulties. They simply Hit harder and you hit for less.

I play on easy ... That it and yes i still die.But at least i'm having fun ..
My ccrew's fighting the broodmother in underwear  without potion..That what i call fun.

I mostly feel the scaling is a bit broken. Played through first game on hard and found it easy in the beginning (probably intentional as tutorial), challenging in the middle and then easy again in the end. The archdemon fight was incredibly easy. Now if the game kept up the challenge from the midgame when your character still lacks alot of his/her talents right through to the end.. that would be great.

I tried to find the lowest difficulty possible and still died a lot on my first playthrough and always having the sence I was playing on hard instead, some battles seemed to never end and some enemies seemed to never die, when I looked at their life bar it didn't seem to change at all, hit after hit. I think I'm a bit better now but I still don't see myself playing it on any higher difficulty just to get upset with the game, I like it a lot to do such a thing lol, unless there is any reward for playing it on higher difficulties but still I would think twice. I hated that Galaxy or something dude a lot... lol...

What makes the game so easy is repetition. I died so many times on the Ogre in Tower of Ishal I damn near cried and that was just on hard.

Err, hu ? Really ? I never wiped on the Ogre. Ever. Once he managed to down 2 of my people, including my HC, but that was all.

I dont need Ascension, I'm not going to solo Demogorgon.

Dammit, I was so happy when I finally managed to beat him with a full group.

Demo was the one mob where Ascension was completely superflous lol.

It takes time to learn what the differant people do, then to mix them together to fight. I was forever at the Tower of Ishal till I had the Mage do her work on him.
