Shepard being alive is to show that it is possible that the destroy
choice was made out of self-preservation and/or as the most pragmatic
decision as "machines can be rebuilt", even though the Geth and EDI
were sentient.

From an in universe perspective, it's not selfish, as it's suggested to Shepard that she won't survive the destruction because of her implants.
