series. Plotwise and namewise there are recurring patterns that occur throughout the games.
Plotwise:
-An ancient civlisation that became extinct 50000 years ago, has left behind ruins and it is unknown (at first) how they disappeared. This happened to both the Protheans and Rakatans. Both termed their collective conquests as 'Empires'. They were warriors and believed in ruthless subjugation of other civilisations that did not serve them.
ME1 and Kotor1
- Revan or Shepard needs to travel to different planets to find information about where a long lost planet is located.
-There is a race for time against a villain (Malak and Saren) who also seeks information about this lost civilisation.
-There is a Jedi council in KOTOR, and a council in Mass Effect, that the main player must gain the the trust of. Once this is done, the main character is sent on a secret mission to piece together the mystery of the lost civilisation.
-The beginning of both games faces the main character against a crime lord. Wrex/Canderous are both mercenaries who work for Fist/Davik, and are recruited to bring down the crimelord.
-Hanharr and Tali are both rescued from slavers
- You can choose to save the Council or let them be destroyed on a ship at the end of both games.
-At the final showdown the Citadel and Star Forge are being attacked, and there is a race to destroy Malak/Saren.
They even look similar!
-Carth and Kaidan have the same voice actor, and both have trouble trusting the main character.
-The Krogan and Mandalorians are both warrior races that have clans, and have resorted to being mercenaries as their culture has fallen apart.
-Both were extremely powerful and had the Mandalorian Wars/Krogan rebellions where they almost took control of the galaxy. The two companions are named after their clan, 'Urdnot' Wrex and Canderous 'Ordo'
-The villain in both games was once a highly respected member of society and a hero.
ME2 and Kotor2
- The Normandy and the Ebon Hawk are attacked at the beginning of the game, and the main character nearly dies.
- An unkown enemy is attacking worlds.
- The two love interests from ME1 and Kotor 1 speak to the main character at one point in the game.
-The Jedi Exile/Shepard has a bounty on their head and encounters many mercenaries throughout the game.
-There is a mercenary group called Red Eclipse in Kotor 2, and one in Mass Effect 2 called Eclipse, and the Blue Suns
- The main character is trying to discover where this enemy is striking from, and has the choice to destroy Malachor V/ the Collector Base at the end of the game.
- Both are significantly darker than their prequels, and take place in 'less civilsed' parts of the galaxy.
-At the end of the game, Shepard/ the Exile discovers that the Collectors/Sith Triumvirate are not the true threat:
there is the True Sith Empire/ Reapers in Dark Space/ the Unknown Regions, and both are waiting for a chance to strike and take control of the Republic/Council Space.
-Kasumi Goto is a squad member in ME2, and GOTO is a squad member in Kotor 2.

The Old Republic/ME3
-The true Sith Empire/Reapers attack with full force and try to take over the galaxy.
- There is a planet named Malgus in ME, and the main foe in TOR is named Darth Malgus.
Names
-Darth Nihlus is a Sith in Kotor 2, Nihlus is a Spectre in ME2
-There is a character on Tatooine named Dorak Quine, and a character on Noveria named Lorak Quine
-Eden Prime is lush planet in Mass Effect, and Rakata Prime in Kotor.
Races
-The Asari and Twi'leks both have tentacles on their heads, and both are discriminated against and viewed by many not as individuals but as objects.
