So my main is the party's general healer. I just decided to pick up AW to make him less of a squishy. What kind of armor is the best balance now between survivability and still having a respectable mana pool.

Arcane Shield and Rock Armor. Robes > Heavy ArmorI, with the exception of the Evon the Great's Mail + Wade's Superior Dragonscale Armor setup, which is still inferior to a good cloth set + spells.
Basically, for early game AW only gives you good melee damage. The better survivability part only works assuming everyone else in the party can't be bothered to defend the mage. From the get-go you can easily use Alistair Taunt + Forcefield to keep everything off you. Combine that with Arcane Shield and Heal, then as long as you're on your way to learning Rock Armor or perhaps the rune line your mage has no good excuse for dying.
There is no way to balance between survivability and decent mana pool early-mid game, the whole point of being an AW is to trade away your casting abilities. The only exceptions are BM/AWs, who are decent/good casters. So unless you rush Wade's Superior Dragonscale Set and sell a few DLC goodies to get Evon the Great's Mail asap, you're basically stuck with a mage who's sometimes a healer, sometimes a warrior.

Touche. Making a mage less squishy is more about picking the right spells and the right cloth bonuses.
Still, it's possible to rush Evon the Great's Mail and the Superior Dragonscale set. Just do two of the major quests iirc (mages' circle and the dalish, the fastest).
