I was doing the "conversation square dance" again last night, you know ... "change your partner do-se-do" ... and came across one I have not seen mentioned.

From memory here, so it's paraphrased not word-for-word.

Zev: So, Sten is not really your name is it? It's a title or rank if I recall.

"Sten": Yes.

Zev: What is your name then?

"Sten": My name is not important.

Zev: Why then do you call yourself "Sten"?

"Sten": It is who I am.

?!?!?!

Interestinger and interestinger!

For someone who is so oft dismissed I am finding much of what Sten has to say quite intriqueing.

I particularly want to know more about the Tal-Vashoth ...

Perhaps after our success against the Arch-demon "Sten" will seek our help against them?

Sten is a title. He does not need to give you his name, it is not important.

His real name is Fluffy... you can see why he prefers to be called Sten.

Also if you bring him to the circle of magi and in the fade, you see hm with two other qunari calling him The Sten, indicating its a title and not a name... maybe its what the Qunari calls their scouts? if my memory is with me (something it rarely is) he said he were a scout for his people

He was the leader of the scout group, Sten is probably the title for that. Qunari don't seem very keen on individuality though, so addressing somebody by what they do (which according to Sten is what you are) is natural.

yeah exactly... would be nice to see a DLC or perhaps next game cover more of the areas in the game like Orlais, Weisshaupt, Par Volen and so on... nad discover more about the qunari as i have found Sten to be quite interesting...well both Morigan and Sten more interesting after re-watching the sacred ashes trailer

His description of the Tal-Vashoth as "empty holes where man once stood" and that story about searching for the villagers who "disappeared" have me wondering just WTH is going on back in Qun.

That made me instantly think of the vord from Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon series.

This reminds me of Futurama for some reason:

Newscaster: ...Captain Turonga Leela was...
Fry: TURONGA?!?!
Amy: That's her name Phillip!
Bender: (spits out beer) Phillip?!?!?

Except he, or at least he seems to, tell of finding pieces of the "disappeared."

I don't recall that with the Vord, but it's been a while since I read that series.

Could be ...

Maybe the pieces were of the ones that didn't get hi-jacked and fought... I don't know, it was just the creepy thought that was in my head.

I believe when he is in the cage in Lothering he says he is a scout for the Qunari military and he is attempting to see how big a threat the Blight is to his own country, and then report back so what better way to accomplish this then to go with the PC's party?

He isn't called Sten, he is called 'The Sten', he is the DAO equivalent of 'The Stig'

Some say he came to Ferelden to answer a question

Edit: No he says it when in the party camp he gives no real information whilst he is in the cage.

He has kind of given up on reporting back, since he lost his sword. He thinks it would be worthwhile to fight the blight though.

He also expressed hope that when Qunari invade Ferelden he wouldn't have to meet the PC on the battlefield. And i'm pretty sure he said 'when' not 'if'. A lot of potential for DLC and even sequel, methinks.

The Qun isn't their country. It's their religion

Given that their religion/philosophy requires proselytization just as much as the Chant does, I'm not a bit surprised that they're planning another invasion. I'd actually like to see it. Mages would either side with the Chantry or try to break away all together, leveraging their utility against the Qunari in exchange for freedom. City elves would probably side with the Qunari unless they were particularly devout. Dalish elves would point and laugh. Dwarves would be too busy fighting darkspawn, but they might incorporate the Qun into their caste system if they had to.

The conflict between Chant and Qun seems too large for a DLC, to be honest. A plotline in a sequel, maybe, but not DLC.

There's more to convo with Sten. right. He says that eventually, he expects his people to invade Ferelden. As for his sword....well...you can find it, you know. He'll still stay to fight the darkspawn.

He also has a conversation line about children not belonging to parents, but to the community. He will explain, and if you summarize correctly, you get huge + points with him. He's at like +90 with my char now and we haven't even started the Landsmeet yet. Just saying.

I want to know what some of the words he uses mean. Kadun. Or whatever it is he calls me. I want some transalations for the Qunari languages, and some for other things said... a glossary. Maybe over on the wiki?

Kadan: Term for something one values highly.  Or sometimes the center of the chest. literally means, "where the heart lies."

Parshaara: Enough.

If I remember rightly one of the possible epilogue texts for him, mentions him coming back as General of an army set to invade Ferelden. The one I tend to get is the one where he is asked if he found anyone worthy (or something else) in Ferelden and he replies that he only found one (kind of hints he is referring to the Warden). :)

Even if it is a new PC I hope that in a sequel we get to have either Sten or another Qunari just like him as a party member, I really liked him and his no nonsense attitude. I would love a Qunari Origin story that delved more into their way of life/way of thinking.

Edit: Yup, was just writing this whilst the last few replies came in, like how he refers to us as Kadan after getting his sword.

It's funny. The characters that grab you in the first playthrough don't hold you. (Morrigan/Alistair). Okay, they are fascinating and a thrill...at first. But Sten was offputting to me the first playthrough.... I never used the right dialog options with him and I left him to sit at camp. Oh, what a waste that turned out to be in hindsight.

Now, I get him friendly right off, and do for him...because he is an awesome fighter. He doesn't require much attention, he doesn't get knocked down often, he just says "direct me" or "your orders" when you select him in battle. I thoroughly enjoy him.

He has told me how much he respects me, and I leave him in charge at the gates in the final battle. Nobody better. He's a great off-tank damager with so much more to him under the skin. and the whole cookies thing cracks me up.

I truly enjoy how Sten turned out as a character. He's worth the investment. Now to learn more of the real Zev.

Nicely done. Kadan!
