Kadan: Term for something one values highly.  Or sometimes the center of the chest. literally means, "where the heart lies."

Parshaara: Enough.

Keep in mind you had to fight him, convince him you're a good leader find his sword AND make sure you don't disagree with him about magic for him to call you Kadan. All shale had to do was be a golem.

LOL, I'm frightened. He's been calling me sweetheart all along and I haven't been sleeping with a hot poker nearby? What if he tries to nuzzle? :o

It's funny. The characters that grab you in the first playthrough don't hold you. (Morrigan/Alistair). Okay, they are fascinating and a thrill...at first. But Sten was offputting to me the first playthrough.... I never used the right dialog options with him and I left him to sit at camp. Oh, what a waste that turned out to be in hindsight.

Now, I get him friendly right off, and do for him...because he is an awesome fighter. He doesn't require much attention, he doesn't get knocked down often, he just says "direct me" or "your orders" when you select him in battle. I thoroughly enjoy him.

He has told me how much he respects me, and I leave him in charge at the gates in the final battle. Nobody better. He's a great off-tank damager with so much more to him under the skin. and the whole cookies thing cracks me up.
I truly enjoy how Sten turned out as a character. He's worth the investment. Now to learn more of the real Zev.

Nicely done. Kadan!

Don't forget the cake!

I agree up until the prison breakout I didn't use Sten much but I decided to use him for that and after that I totally respected him and decided to delve more into getting to know him and I now consider him high on the list for most of my characters to have in the party at some point or other. That and the incident I hinted at in first sentence really did confirm that I needed to use him more. Even if he is a big softeee underneath :P

Yes the Cookie issue must be remedied, mmm, now I want some.

Kadan - it sounds like it could be friend or ally... perhaps brother? As far as their military I think that Sten is more than just a scout. In the fade your have 2 other qunari, the karashok and the ashaad, who seem to defer to Sten. He also speaks of the kithshok and arishok who I believe are his superiors. From what I can glean from our conversations the order would be: Arishok, Kithshok, Sten, Karashok and Ashaad.

As well as Kadan Sten also says you must be an Ashkaari... I think thy are like Bodhisattva's in the Buddhist religion. "A being that compassionately refrains from entering nirvana in order to save others." I believe he tells a story of the Ashkaari and the bee which is what leads me to think they are similar. And when he speaks of your fellow Grey Wardens that fell at Ostegar (sp) I refers to them as kith... which makes me think that shok means "leader of" maybe? I'm not sure what parsharra means though.

Shanedan sounds like a salutation, more friendly than formal I think.

It seem I was thinking about that longer than I relized.   If you are taking request would you happen to know what "kabethari" means?

If he's already nuzzling isn't it too late for that? I mean, that'd probably mean a need to leave some body part behind. Like the wolf chewing off the paw to get out of the trap, except you aren't the one who's doing the chewing...

There's another term, ashak, I think, that comes up when you talk to him about magi and he's telling the story/metaphor of being surprised vs. unsurprised about the bee sting. The ashak is clearly a person but it doesn't really explain what his role is in the convo, I gathered that maybe he was some sort of noble/landowner? Would you be able to shed some light on this too? I was particularly interested because it seems to come from the Turkish word aşık (ashik/ashak), which, from what I understand is often used in literary contexts in Turkish to mean a lover. Is this just coincidence or are the Qunari words pulled from specific languages?

What! No one knows who Sten really is. He is the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street in disguise. Who else could be so tough and soft at the same time? And it expalins his love of cookies and cake!

Sten has become one of my favorite characters, he has quite a bit of depth to him and a strong sense of honor. I have been using him a lot this playthrough and much of his banter is insightful. I do enjoy the "softie" exchange with Leliana as well. I would like to find out more about him in DLC or an expansion. I would love to be able to buy cookies to give to him at some point (oatmeal chocolate chip cookies should be better than a painting- right?)

Thanks for the translations Mary.

Kabethari: "Simple person."  Term used for all recently-conquered people who haven't converted to the Qun.

Shanedan: "Hello."  (literally, "I'll hear you.")

You got Ashkaari right.  It means "one who seeks" and refers to either scientists, philosophers, or those who have found enlightenment.

"Shok" actually means war or struggle.

I want to buy him a kitten. You know he'd lie and say he was training it to be a fierce war kitten, but he'd secretly love to pet its kitten fuzz and call it Snoogie woogie.

Sten... was just awesome. Still, I'm hoping for a Tal'Vashoth party member next time round, just for the other side of the coin.

The Qun seems to be based off eastern philosophy... sort of Islamic, without a deity? At least Sten never mentions a diety as much as a philosophy.

Very far from Islamic I'd say. Don't confuse their ultra-caste system with misogyny for example. They don't have women be fighters, but they do have them as priests and merchants, etc. and presumably don't let the men do that. Even if they did, those roles are potential positions of power that are simply not afforded to women under Islam. Or Christianity for that matter.

I'm not so much referring to the structural protrusions of middle-eastern culture in Islamic faith; as much as the philosophy of the Qur'an

EDIT: I'm making a comparison between the Qun and Islam, not the Qunari and Muslims.

Before I played this game, I wasn't sure if I was going to like Sten. I figured his personality would clash with the idealistic personality that I imagined for my first character. I actually ended up really liking him when my character got to know him more, and his honor. RPing my character, he ended up having a very deep respect for the big guy. Also, I thought the line about training the kitten to become a warrior was the funniest thing I've heard in this game yet!

There another qunari word I'm curious about. When you deselect him on the party screen, he says, "vashadin" or some-such. I'm wondering if the translation can even be posted here :P

Vashedan: could be loosely translated as "crap."  (literally, refuse or trash.)

What about when Sten charges into battle? I really like hearing his battle cries - they seem a lot more believe than my own pc's.

'Akash Qunari' and then the other one was "something something Berasaad". I think it started with an "n". Seems like he would be crying about something of glory for the qunari or fear the berasaad.

Aw, man... you're going to make me translate his whole soundset now?  How did this thread turn into Qunari language lessons?  *mutter, grumble*

Ataash qunari! "Glory to the qunari!"
Nehraa Beresaad! "For the vanguard!"
Katara, bas! "Die, thing!"
Ebost issala! "Return to dust!"
Ashkost say hissra! "Seek peace with your gods!"
Nehraa kadan! "For my brothers!"
Anaan esaam Qun! "Victory in the Qun!"

I'm going to let you guess at the "Rawr!" and "Arrrgh!" shouts.
