Also his name?  No.  Qunari don't use them to identify themselves, their "names" are strings of genealogical information used by the Tamassrans for record keeping.

It turns out that Stens name is Seven of Nine, Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero-One.

But he doesn't look good in a black skin-tight jumpsuit.  Which is why he never admits that.

Wow. Thanks for THAT mental image. if i have nightmares tonight im blaming you.

There is nothing wrong with Sten in a jumpsuit... though now that I picture it he seems to be ice skating too....

Thanks for the translations Mary!  It's nice to learn a bit more about Sten and the qunari, I find them to be among the more fascinating inhabitants of Thedas.  :D

Thank you, Professor Kirby. This Qunari lesson has been most enlightening.

Sten is 120kg of awesome. I disliked him at first but once you start to explore his conversations and things, he's a very well written character. He likes you, Shale, SPG, swords and orders.

Although not having a second character specialisation does take away a bit of the awesomeness.

(*SPG = Special Patrol Group = Dog)

Also Sten does like to be a smartarse. Being acknowledged of his smartarsary is one of the few things in games that satisfy him.

Listening to Mark Hildreth's voice outside of DA:O, I never would have guess he was the VA for Sten.

Thanks for the translations! Very nice to know about them. I kept thinking kadan was like brother/comrade, so it was very interesting to find out the exact definition. Is the Qun based on a mixture of Eastern philosophies? I keep thinking it's vaguely Buddhist/Taoist/Confucian on some level (with a highly restrictive social caste system).

He also expressed hope that when Qunari invade Ferelden he wouldn't have to meet the PC on the battlefield. And i'm pretty sure he said 'when' not 'if'. A lot of potential for DLC and even sequel, methinks.

Given that their religion/philosophy requires proselytization just as much as the Chant does, I'm not a bit surprised that they're planning another invasion. I'd actually like to see it. Mages would either side with the Chantry or try to break away all together, leveraging their utility against the Qunari in exchange for freedom. City elves would probably side with the Qunari unless they were particularly devout. Dalish elves would point and laugh. Dwarves would be too busy fighting darkspawn, but they might incorporate the Qun into their caste system if they had to.

The conflict between Chant and Qun seems too large for a DLC, to be honest. A plotline in a sequel, maybe, but not DLC.

Given how Sten describes the treatment of mages among the Qunari I don't think the circle would be too keen to support them.  The whole cutting out the tongues and blinding, not quite good if you ask me

Considering that the Qunari have no families in the traditional sense, their friends are their loved ones, and their colleagues are their families.  "Kadan" is their all-purpose word for "person I care about in some way and hope doesn't die in a fire."  That other cultures have separate categories for people they care about seems baffling to qunari, and they treat this as a linguistic quirk, the way English speakers treat the genders of nouns.

Edit: @ Felene:  The dragon age wiki already snagged this one.

Sten is my favourite Dragon Age NPC, kudos to Mary. Best bit of dialogue, by far (apart from Sten's STFU moment to Morrigan when he calls her bluff, describing 'lurve Sten style') is when he describes a Qunari victory parade at the end. It's hilarious.

As I read it, the Qunari use a number of real life and fantasy tropes - on the one hand their march across new lands as a technologically advanced and ideological people *is* reminiscent of Islam in the medieval era. I'm also picking up early Communism, shades of North Korea and any number of authoiritarian, militaristic societies.

Sten's a great character because he's the polar opposite of a lot of fantasy game NPCs... you have to work to get to know him and he's completely unbothered if you don't.

Again, kudos to the writer.

I think one of the devs once called it a form of militant buddhism.

Wow, look what I missed overnight!

Sleep is so over-rated ...

From the comments of so many elswhere I had no idea there were this many of us who see the depth BioWare has given "Sten" and seek to know more.

Indeed I did not try hard enough in my first play through, though we were on good terms through-out and he never challenged me.

In the battle for the Gates of Denerim I did leave him in command, and my choice was rewarded with success.

This time I am making a deliberate effort to make him a more active party member and learn more.

Thank very much Mary Kirby for sharing with us, we appreciate that. :o

Thank you BioWare for rewarding those of us who role-play our games and try to dig a little deeper. :o:O

I wonder too what else we haven't discovered yet ... ;)

I want to know what some of the words he uses mean. Kadun. Or whatever it is he calls me. I want some transalations for the Qunari languages, and some for other things said... a glossary. Maybe over on the wiki?

Kadan: Term for something one values highly.  Or sometimes the center of the chest. literally means, "where the heart lies."

Parshaara: Enough.

I KNEW Sten loved me! Image IPB

Nope ... Qunari can't love anyone ... they're the tranquil of mankind ... Image IPB

I really like Sten. Often doesn't quite fit into my groups, but when I can get him in I use him a lot.

I love Sten. He's a character I'm really interested in learning more about. I haven't really had him around in my party much however, so I didn't manage to see a lot of the party banter.

I read someone talking about scenes that you can get when you walk around. He'll mention something about a place and you can ask him about it later? I'm gonna be keeping him around a lot for more conversation on this play through. It's always fun to chat with him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking of Sten it seems to me that there are certain things that you can ask him but if you ask at certain times you loose the option to ask him. Is that the way that works?

What I'm saying is whenever I ask him "Why were you sitting in that cage?" it's usually early in the game he refuses to really talk about it (he says "sitting as you observed") and I haven't yet seen the option pop back up again. I swear I remember getting a different conversation out of him with that question once, could just be wishful thinking however: :D.

When you have high enough approval, he will tell you. And then you go on an epic adventure to find his sword.

Ah that's where the conversation led before I just didn't remember.

I haven't gotten through a second playthrough yet so I must have just forgotten it.

Is there some place that shows a Qunari female?

Also, what does a Qunari broodmother look like?
