Hey everyone, playing through DA:O for the first time. I'm playing Hard, and it hasn't been too bad...up until now. I'm trying to leave Redcliffe to go anywhere else, but am getting ambushed by darkspawn on my journey (the ambush right after the Zevran ambush, which I didn't have any difficulty with).
I am running Dwarf Rouge (level 9), Sten as tank (level 10, Alistar sucks), Wynee as healer, and Morrigan as damage/backup healer.
So, it starts off with three hurlocks around me and three archers. No matter where I run, the archers hit me, and they keep pumping foot soldiers at me until I wipe. It is very cheap and frustrating, as Earthquake doesn't do squat against their archers, and I can hit the foot soldiers with Earthquake without catching a party member in it and them dying to arrows. What am I doing wrong? It is driving me insane.
Dealing with Darkspawn Ambush (after Zevran Ambush)

Never mind, I got it. Kited them left while absorbing arrows, then after a lot of cheap tactics by the darkspawn I got the leader and finished it.

For the first playthrough, DA:O can be quite challenging - playing on hard on that first playthrough is a brave thing indeed. ![=]](https://lvlt.forum.bioware.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sideways.png)
Expect more frustration if you continue on hard - there are many difficult battles ahead. DA:O is, I think, inherently a bit more difficult than, say, DA2, especially going into it first time.
Just a little spell advice - you may know this already, but in case you don't: what I'd suggest is focusing on crowd control spells for your mage - the ones that target enemies, and thus don't run the risk of friendly fire. "Paralysis" and "Mass Paralysis" are great, as are "sleep" and "walking nightmare".
Since you have Earthquake, you'll have stonefist too - that means that winter's grasp and cone of cold can be very powerful - cast a stonefist on a frozen target, and they may shatter. Check out other spell combos here.
And don't feel too bad about dropping the dificulty to normal for a fight if it gets too difficult - on a first playthrough, you tend to miss things, and that means less loot, maybe missed items or other rewards, and thus "hard" will be harder for a first time player on that account too.

Great advice, thanks! I'm trying to drop Wynne out of the equation so I'm specing Morrigan for a Damage/Shapeshifter/Healer hybrid. It seems to be working well so far. Didn't really know about the discriminating crowd control spells, I'll have to look into those.
